Let Not Your Hearts Be Troubled BELIEVE IN GOD, AND IN CHRIST. Scripture?John H. By NEWMAN' CAMPBELL THE TIME when Jesus and His disciples were together and Jesus uttered the beautiful, comforting words which constitute today's lesson, was Thursday of Holy Week, and the place was some where between the Lord's Supper irjAhe upper room and the Garden oj^Hthsemane. ^^mst had convinced the Apos tles that He was going to leave | them, and they were very sad hearted and in need of comfort and guidance. We can imagine that they wondered what they ,would do without Him; how they could carry on His work and how terribly they would miss His pres ence with them? The younger children could be reminded of their feelings when their mother was obliged to be absent from home for some time; how desolate the house seemed without her: it wap no longer home. Or their sadness when their father was called upon to know." However, Thomas said: "Lord, we know not whither Thou goest; and how can we know the way?" Jesus answered, "I am the way,' the truth and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me." Then Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it suf ficeth us." Jesus' answer was: "Have I been so long with you, and yet hast thou not known Me, Philip? He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father; . . . Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The Words that I speak unto you, I speak not of Myself; but the Father that dwelleth in Me, He doeth the works." Then Christ promised them, "He that believeth on Me, the works that I do shall he do also: and greater works than these shall he do; because I go to My Father." Not only did Jesus fore* MEMORY VERSE "Let not your heart he troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in Me."?John H:l. take a long- journey to be gone for some time, and how they missed him. Looking at the troubled faces ?f these men who had been His close friends and helpers during His ministry, Jesus said, "Let not your heart be troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in Me." Then He said: "In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." I How many troubled hearts have been soothed by those words of Our Lord's, although nearly 2,000 years have passed since He pro nounced them. Learned in Sunday ? school, the children will doubtless console themselves with them later in their lives when they en counter the problems of life. ( Jesus then said. "And whither * go, ye know, and the way ye. tell that the works of His fol lowers would he physical miracles ! such as He performed, but the task cf spreading His gospel far | and wide, even to the Gentiles. Further Jesus said: "I will not leave you comfortless; I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth Me no more, but ye see Me; because I live, ye shall live also. "He that hath My command ments. and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me: and he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him." Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would come to His Apos tles and comfort them after He was gone, and "He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, , whatsoever I have said unto you. "Peace I leave with you. My peace I give unto you; not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." Distributed by King Features Syndicate 1 ? \ I Ojr Quct \A t ojj (|<>J/ Some people argue that the words of Christ imply that God's Kingdom belongs to children and not to adults. Indeed, there are some families whose worship habits suggest as much. The youngsters are bundled off to Sunday School; and the grown-ups stay home. But Biblical scholars have long agreed that Christ's words point to the attitude, not the age, which is the ^ mark of God's Kingdom. A The implicit faith, the humble ac ceptance, the eager yearning with V which children approach Christ's teaching ? these are the qualities which belong to God's Kingdom. ^ Perhaps we are foolishly infatu- j ated with the notion that our chil- j dren should follow in our footsteps. 1 If we start them in the right direc tion, the direction of the Church, we may gain much more by following in . theirs. THE CHURCH FOBJUi. . ? - " " AUFOR THE CHURCH ? The Church is the greatest factor on earth for W the building of character and good citizenship. H It is a storehouse ot spiritual values. Without a ? strong Church, neither democracy nor civilization can survive. There are lour sound reasons why ? every person should attend services regularly and support the Church. They are: (1) For his own sake (2) For his children's sake. (3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4) For the sake ol the Church itself, which needs his moral and material support Plan to go to church regu* larly and read your Bible daily.
