Even now the Red Cross in France is call ing for a vast quantity of knitted woolen goods and elsewhere in to day's Gazette, in the Red Cross column, will be found a scedule'of what Gastonia is expected to fur nish in this line. It is no small quan tity. If it la forthcoming promptly as it should be there will not be much room In town this winter for the ordinary run of social frivolities. The seriousness of the crisis con fronting our country should not be minimized by the women. They should eliminate everything of a frivolous character and get down to work. Instead of tea parties ana yook parties a,nd porch parties, etc., why not have knitting parties and turn out some of the things whicn our men are going to need sorely in the trenches this winter? City School Department With the coming of the teachers soon there comes a very important problem for the city that or pro viding suitable boarding places for them. In our business and prosperi ty we must not forget the important place the teacher fills in our com munity. The teacher does part of the work of the parent that part which in the organization of our so ciety the parent cannot do for tne child. Under the law the teacher is regarded as in the place or the par Ait, therefore the teacher deserves a place in the homes of the community. Gastonia is too good a city not to open up her nomes and provide well for those who are giving tnemselves for the training and instruction of the youth of the city. The superin tendent would be very glad to hear from any and every one wno can give a home to one or more teachers dur ing the present session. It has been decided that Mr. P. F. Giles and Mrs. Edgar Johnston will conduct the County Institute August 27 to September 7. These are the State Institute Conductors, and their duty, in part, is to help certify tnose who are licensed to teach In North Carolina for the coming year. It is Waterman's Ideal Vf Fountain Pen Ought to be carried by every man in the army AND UP We have them $2.50 H. M. Van Sleen Jeweler absolutely necessary that each and every -teacher and supervisory officer have a certificate of attendance upon an institute or an accredited summer school either during 19io or 1917 before being elegible to teacn tne coming year. The 1917 graduates or A-l Normal Colleges will not Have to attend this year. But, since they will be required to attend next year, they had best attend this summer, if there is one near. Gastonia's superintendent should like very much to have all Gastonia teachers present in this Institute. Mrs. Johnston will start the teaching of the Free & Treadwell Readers. There will be much to gala from our mingling with the other teachers of the county. It will give us an oppor tunity to get acquainted Defore our work begins. It is a very lame ex cuse for a teacher to say tnai sne was not expecting school to begin before September, and that she is not ready. Every teacher should have known a year ago that school would begin not far from the first of September and a week earlier or later should make very little difference. Only a provi dential hindrance will excuse a Gas tonia teacher from the law reaulrtna I attendance upon the institute. It has been very gratifying to re ceive assurances from so many of tne teachers, even those who are not com pelled to do so, that they are going to attend. In case one has taken a course at a good summer school the superintendent does not expect that one to tome until September 7th, ir such a one feels the need of rest to get ready for a strenuous year's work. The people of Gastonia should co operate with County Superintendent Hall in caring for the teachers dur ing the institute. A number of the teachers will need to come to Gasto nia for two weeks. They will need homes. How many will help Super intendent Hall by pormlsing to fur nish board or room, or both, to one or more teachers from August 27 to September 7 at' as reasonable a cost as possible.
