f J THURSDAY, JULY 2», 1948 Poole’s Medley BY D. SCOTT POOLE \. Z. B. Vance was elected Gov $mor of North Carolina in the eiection of 1876, and T. J, Jarvis was elected Lieutenant Governor. Vance was elected to the United States Senate in 1877, and then Jarvis yas promoted to the gover norship, After serving as Govern or filling out Vance’s term, Jarvis sought and obtained a term of four years of his own. So Jarvis served almost seven years as Governor of this state. No one has served so long as Governor. campaign, and he made one of his best speeches. After he had spoken, the large crowd present called for Steele, (Walter L.) a home man, and Steele was given as much applause as was given Vance. . ' Steele was a former Congress man from that district. I dislike dishonesty in any any form. People, men, I should say, did some dirty things com- paingning ^ for office. It’s really ugly. We had. heavy downi>ours of rain, not too much, but the way it rained packed the groimd several times so far this spring and summer. It is hard to get even a good guess at what this fall’s politics will bring us, but I advise that all be as sensible as possible. Alfred Scales was . a good Governor, and served after Jar vis. The next Governor of this state was Daniel G. Fowl. He died in office, and Lieut. Governor Holt filled his unexpired term. It is just as much sin doing -wrong in politics as doing wrong in any other way. You do not have to do wrong things. Every body has a right to his political opiniT ons. Abide by your convictions. surely be elected. The amomt of liquor beKng consumed is alarming is alarm ing tile drinkers, and wellmay it disturb thm. It is a erous thing to drink. Only three fourths of the voters voted the election in 1833; so if the people had a chance I bdieve they would restore pro hibition. These elections to stop the sale of beer and wine was the way Repeal started. The Russians are white people, and it is now thought they are in a notion to throw off the yoke of tyranny now pressing them to earth. ' A government of the people, by the people and for the people is the best government on arth. The ugliest political quarrel I ever heard was between James L. Currie and Devotion t>avis. Davis was very profane, and was in the last stages of tuberculosis. Currie was not unreasonable. Davis was. Both have been dead for years. There were a number of men in Moore county who could make political speeches, but they were no better than some.living. Zeb Vance remained in the Senate as long as he lived. I was on a train enroute to Fayetteville when I heard Vance was dead, and the news was a great grief to me. Vance had the best assort ment of jokes that fitted all cases, and he kept his crowd roaring with laughter. He spoke in Rock ingham one day during a political jTalmage O. Southern Marble Works The Baptist minister who founded. Spring Hill Baptist Church, near Wagram, was a man of faith. When his section was suffering from drought, he would call a prayer meeting, and when the people assembled he would say. “Turn your cushions over.” The rain never failed to fall in answer to his prayers, folks said. Johnson was criticized for the handling .of the State’s surplus funds, but the Council of State directs the depositing of the State’s money, and every State officer has a say in how such funds are handled. I was opposed to the Populist Party, and especially opposed to to fusion with the Republicans. Russell was our Fusion Governor. It was Whigs and Democrats until 1860. After that the Whigs became Republicans. n i M. G- (Gas) McKenzie was the only Democrat allowed to vote at Jackson Springs in 1866. Those who had part in the Confederate Government were debarred from voting after the war. Lawyers have been' elected more often to the office of.
