C., under the Act of March 3, 1870. Dies In P^iha. Mrs. Emilie Lawrence Reed, widow of Dr. Walter Reed, the conqueror of j’ellow fever, died early Sunday at her home in Pennsylvania. She was 94. Born in Murfreesboro, N. C.. Mrs. Reed was one of nine child ren of John and Hannah Rea Lawrence. She was- married to Reed in 1876. when he was a first lieutenant in the Army medical corps. \ ' The noted bacteriologist, for whont the Army’s Walter Reed hospital at Washington is named was selected in 1899 to head a commission to study the cause of yellow fever in Cuba. PERSONALS Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Hutchinson and family of Hertford, N. C. were in Raeford last week. They brought Mary Elizabeth Lytle, who had been visiting them, home. Mn and Mrs. • Marion • 'Gatlin and children will return today from Topsail Beach, where they have been vacationing. Mrs. W. S. Hood and children who have been visiting Mrs. Hood’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Warren, left Thursday for their home in Falls Church, Virginia. They were accompanied home by Miss Billie McIntyre for a visit. Miss Elcise McLauchlin was on vacation from Collins Department Store last week and spent the week in Western North,Carolina. Mrs. W. L. McFadyen is spend ing this week in Burlington in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Gammon and family. / Cpl. and Mrs. N. M. Fippinger returned to Raeford Saturday af ter a trip to New York and Ports mouth, Va. They were accompan ied home by Mrs. Russell Terrell and children of Portsmouth, Va. Mrs, Malcolm Gillis has re> turned home from Highsmith hos pital and is improving nicely af ter imdergoing a major operation. Little Judy Moniroe Gillis has been staying with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs? Floyd Monroe, while her mother has been sick. Bill Moses, Duke Marshall and Bobby Gibson spent the week end in Raleigh. O. W. Holtzclaw and Miss Bet ty Holtzclaw returned yesterday after a week’s visit in Cedartown, Ga,, with relatives. A family gathering was held at On Monday afternoon friends of Mrs. Bob Coijk had the pleasure of welcoming her to Raeford again, when her hostess, Mrs. J. B. Thomas, invited a small num ber of friends and neighbors in for coca-colas at four o’clock. Also present on ,this occasion were Mrs. J. B. Hoyl and Miss Elizabeth Hoyl of Fort Lauder dale, Fla. \ , Barry Barrington, who is man ager of the Goodyear Service Store in Ft. Pierce, Florida, re cently won in a contest' for sell ing the greatest nuihher of Gen- erfd Electric refrigerators in Eas tern Florida. He sold' 95 refrige rators during the months of May and June, and '^as given a free trip by ^lane . frbm Jacksonville, Fla. to Erie, Pa.'to visit the G. E. plants, after wjiich he was a guest at the Waldorf-Astoria ho tel in'New York for several days. Mrs. Daniel Wright entered Moore County hospital Monday for an operatioh.
