I l/K \ A '7 ^cials-Pefsonal MR. AND MRS. WOOD CELEGRATE FIFTIETH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. 'J.' Luther Wood celebrated their Golden. Weddjng Anniversary on Tuesday evening, July 25. Open house viras held in their home at Pine Forest from g imtil 10. The rooms were attrac tively decorated with golden dalhias, yellow glads, ivy and fern. Guests were greeted by the daughters and sons-in-laws of the couple. Mrs. Jennie Smith as^r sisted Mr.' and Mrs. Wood in re ceiving in the living room, after which Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Wood directed the guests to the register on the side pofch. which was de corated with trailing ivy and fern. Mrs. Howard McAnulty and Mrs. Mary Helton had charge of the register, placed on a table with an arrangement of lilies, fever few and golden baby mums. Pic tures of the couple were shown from an early album. The serving table, also on the porch, had a lovely bowl of white glads with fern at one end and a punch bowl at the other. Mrs. J. F. Jordan and Mrs. Roby Calloway served punch and individual cakes and nuts were served by Hilda Jpr- dan, Elaine Carroll, Dot Callo way alnd Barbara Worley. The couple received many pretty and useful gifts. These were unwrap ped and displayed on a table by Mrs. Glenn W. Wood. More than 75 guests called during the even ing. Mrs. Wood was the former Miss Letha Catherine ,Briggs of Mt. Airy. Mr. and Mrs. Wood have three daughters, Mrs. McNair Smith and Mrs. Paul Burnett of Raeford and Mrs. George J ohnson of Greenville; three sons, Kermit of Raeford, Glenn W. of Hudson, N. •Y., and Gilmer of Mt. Airy. They have 16 grandchildren. On Sunday relatives of Mr. an4 Mrs. Wood gathered for a picnic and spent the day at the Wood home. Guests came from widely scattered areas to enjoy this oc casion. It was a reunion for old friends who had grown up to gether and many had not seen each other for several years. Nieces and nephews of Mr. and Mrs. Wood planned their vaca- tibn so that they could join them at this time for celebration. Fri ends enjoyed talking over old times and they especially enjoyed the old school pictures that have been preserved through the years. People came from Jacksonville. Florida, Hudson, N. Y., Greens boro, High Point, Winston-Salem, Elkin. Dobson. Kannapolis, Green ville. Mrs. Glenn W. Wood and chil dren, Glenn W. Jr.. Virginia and Tommy of Hudson, N. Y., are spending this week in the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Wood. DESSERT BRIDGE FOR VISITORS Mrs. Neill A. McDonald and Mrs. Crawford Thomas entertain ed with three tables of bridge on Tuesday afternoon at'the home of Mrs. Thomas. They honored Mrs. Bob Conk, who formerly lived in Raeford while her husband was stationed at Ft, Bragg and while he was in the Pacific area during World War II, Mrs. Thomas, the former Miss Laura Hoyl. and Miss Elizabeth Hoyl of Ft. LauSerdale, Florida, guests of' Mrs. Tommie Upchurch. Dessert, consisting of a refresh ing ice course, was served at at tractively appointed tables be fore the bridge game. Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Mc Donald gave their honorees sim ilar gifts for remembrance ' and" gave the prize for high score to Mrs. Thomas, one of the honorees. COUPLES ClJUB MEETS AT GIBSON HOME Mr. and Mrs." W. T. Gibson, Jr. entertained the members of the couples club at*'their home last Saturday, evening. Club members making up two tables were pres ent. At the end of the game high score prizes were awarded to Mrs. Neill Senter and Clyde Up church, Jr. A delicious ice course was ser ved after the game. . 0 MRS. SENTER CLUB HOTESSES SENIOR BRIDGE CLUB ENTERTAINED Mrs. Marshall Thomas was hos tess to the senior bridge club at its regular meeting Friday even ing. She served a. dessert course, consisting of delicious hame made ice cream and cake before the game. There were two tables playing bridge. Mrs. R. A. Matheson won the high score prize in bridge and Mrs. W. L. Poole won the bingo prize. Mrs. A. K. Currie was a guest of the club. 0 BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENTS Mr. and Mrs. Ebb Barrington of Fuquay Springs announce the birth of a son, Sunday, July 23. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Mc Neill announce the birth of a daughter, ^argaret Anne, at Highsmith Hospital, Friday, July 20. Miss Mattie McLauchlin, pop ular saleswoman at Collins, is her vacation this week. Mr. and Mrs. John Draughan and children moved into the up stairs apartment at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse GuUedge last week. Mr. and Mrs. Draughan and two children have ‘ recently moved to Raeford from Hender sonville. Mr. Draughan is now manager of the local Collins Store, of which he was assistant manager several years ago. Mrs. R. A. Matheson went to Charlotte Satiurday to meet Alice Sutton Matheson, who was re turning rome from an extended visit to a school friend in Texas and Mexico. Mrs. L. B. Sutton, who had been visiting her son in Asheville, alro returned to Rae ford with Mrs. Matheson. Mrs. Daniel Jones and son are visiting Mrs. Jones' 'parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Barrington in Clio, S. C. Misses Gwen Gore and Anne Graham came home for the week end from Chapel pill, where they are attending summer school. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Currie and family spAt the week end at Myrtle Beach. Miss Jean Campbell of Char lotte was a week end guest of Mr. and Mrs. Charlton Campbell. Mrs. Mary Helton, Mrs. Craw ford Wright, Mrs. Luther Tapp and Bassil Wright visited Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Alexander, Jr. in Chapel Hill Sunday. Mrs. Neil Senter was hostess to the Wednesday^ afternoon bridge club last week. Visitors other than club members were Mrs. Julian Blue, Mrs. Crawford Thomas and Mrs. Heywood Faircloth. Mrs. W. T. Gibson, Jr. won the club high score prize and Mrs. Thomas the visitor’s prize. Mrs. Senter served a dessert course before the game. Karla Lockett, daughter of Lt. and Mrs. Herbert Lockett, under went a tonsilectomy at Highsmith Hospital last Friday nibrning. i Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dezerne re turned Sunday after spending last week at Carolina Beach. Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Fitzsimmons and two daughters of Macon. Ga., and Mr. and Mrs. Keith Tovey of Chicago, Ill. have returned to their homes after a visit with Mrs. Fitzsimmons’ and Mrs. To- vey’s mother, Mrs. Ryan McBryde. They all arrived Wednesday of last week and left the first of this week. Born to Mr. and Mrs. McCol lum of Leaksville, N. C. at Moore County hospital, a daughter. Mar gery Glenn. Mrs. McCollum is the former Sarah Louise McCain. 0 Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Gordon and two daughters, Nancy and Carol, of New York are visiting Mrs. Gordon’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Harris. Mr. and Mrs, Ed McNeill spent the week end and first part of the week at. Myrtle Beach. Little Eddie stayed with his grand- rnather, Mrs. John Walker. Lt. Col. and Mrs. Conk and daughter, Lynn, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Thomas for several days this week. They have been stationed at Ft. Levenworth. Kansas, but are now on their way to Heidelburg, Germanl, Lt. Col. Conk’s new assignment. Miss Hilda Priest of Elizabeth town and Bettie Little of Union. S. C. were week end guests of Mrs. W. L. Poole. Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Coleman who spent the month of June and July at the Austin Cottage at Top sail Beach arrived in Raeford this week for a short visit with Mrs. Coleman’s mother, Mrs. J. H. Austin before returning to their home in New York. Mrs. Coleman is the former Miss Myr tle Austin. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Sellars had as their week end guests Mr. Sel lar’s mother, Mrs. Robert Sellars and Bobby Sellars of Norfolk, Va. Little Catherine Sellars ac companied them home for a visit. Dr. and Mrs. Marcus Smith and children returned to their home Sunday night, after having spent two weeks at Montreat followed by a visit to Fontana Dam, Knox ville, Tenn. and Southwest Vir ginia. Wayne Britt of Fuquay Springs is a guest of Larry Upchurch at Hoffman this week. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Willis left Tuesday for Seymour, Indi ana, for a visit in the home of Mrs. Willis’ sister, Mrs. Richard Burkhart and family. Mr. and Mrs. William Coving ton and two sons. Tommy and John, of Charlotte are spending this week in Raeford with Mrs. W. T. Covington. Mr. ahd Mrs. Sam Morris had as their guests Sunday, Mrs. Morris’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Pernell and Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Winn of near Louisburg. Mrs. Winn and Mrs. Morris are sisters. M. and Mrs. Heywood Fair- cloth spent the week end in Hem ingway, S. C. with Mrs. Fair- cloth’s parents. Mr. and Mrs. Williams. Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Amos, who visited thei rdaughter, Mrs. Mar guerite Pearson, last week, re turned to their home in Kinston Saturday. Mrs. Jim Carver, the former Miss Frances Jean Freeman, and her mother. Mrs. Walter Freeman, were visitors in Raeford the first of this week. Mrs. Carver and son recently arrived in the States, coming by plane from Samsun, Turkey, to Boston and then Aber deen, where she will make an extended visit to her mother; Mr. and Mrr. Younger Snead, Younger Jr. and Mrs. Snead’s mother, Mrs. C. P. Vincent of Weldon, spent the week end in the mountains of North Carolina They went especially to see Ja- nelle Snead, who is at Camp Jiiu- aluska and to see the pageant, "Unto These Hills” at Cherokee Mrs. A. B. Gibson and children. Mrs. Tom Haywood and son' of Laurinburg and Mrs. Mollie Gay of Margaretville, N. C. visited Mrs. Jesse Gibson la^t Wednes day. Miss Pearl Terry returned from Highsmith hospital Tuesday. While there she underwent a major operation. Mrs. Jesse Gibson and Mrs. Bill Jones visited Rev. and Mrs. W. L. Maness and Bishop and Mrs. W. W. Peele in Gibson last Thursday. J. C. W. L. Lamont returned Fr;day after a week’s visit in the homes of Mrs. J. V. Matthews at Black- ville, S. C. and Mrs. A. G. White at Manning. S. C. Mrs. Matthews and Mrs. White were sisters of the late Mrs. Lamont. Mrs. J. C. McLean is visiting her mother, Mrs.. Henninger. ,n Statesville. While Mrs. McLean is in Statesville Btos. Maude Mc Lean Sessoms of Norfolk is keep ing house for her brother. Mr. and Mrs. J. Lynn Blocker visited Mrs. Blocker’s sister, Mrs. Pauline Brannon at Hotel Raeford last week.
