Sports Buckettes Gain Win The Hoke High Girl's Varsity basketball team scored a win Fri day night marching past Pinecrest 52-36 and increasing their record to 10-3 for the season. Del Pridgen was high scorer dur ing the game with 18 points. Bren da Melvin scored 10 points and teammate Sheila Southerland add ed eight points to lead the lady Bucks to another victory. "The team played well together," Girl's Head Coach Audrey Long said. Hoke Wrestlers Shine In Loss The Hoke High wrestlers took two more losses last week as they were downed by Terry Sanford and Pinecrest, bringing their record to a disappointing 0-12 for the season. The Buck wrestlers were barely defeated Wednesday as Terry San ford pulled away 39-38 in a close home match. Buck grapplers Billy Locklear, Bruce Jacobs, Tim Billinger, Ricky Jones and Joey Huffman were named outstanding players during the game. The Bucks were once again defeated Friday as Pinecrest main tained a lead and took the victory 42-36. Billy Locklear, Glenn Dudley, Bruce Jacobs, Ricky Jones, Orlan do McKinnon and Jeff Fellows were named outstanding players in the Pinecrest game. (Photo by Terry Houston) Three Honored For Performances Three Buck athletes have been honored as Athletes of the Week by the Hoke High Coaching Staff for the week of January 16-20. Two varsity and one non -varsity athlete were so honored. The Varsity Male Athlete of the Week is Ricky Jones. Ricky, a 17-year-old senior is a member of the Bucks' Wrestling Team. Ricky usually wrestles in the 134 pound weight class, but last week he wrestled up one weight class at 140 pounds. Ricky was nominated Tor his performances in last week's ?matches against Terry Sanford and Pinecrest. In the Terry Sanford match, Ricky pinned his opponent in 1 :04. In the Pinecrest match he pinned his opponent in 1:08. These wins run Ricky's record to 1 1 wins and four losses. According to Coach Russell Smith, "Ricky is very strong and he is doing very well, despite his mat inexperience since he has only wrestled in the 9th and 12th grades." Coach Smith credits Ricky's success to this strength. "Ricky is very strong in the upper body," Smith added, "and he uses this to his advantage." Ricky is very involved in other activities besides sports. He is also very involv ed in the activities of St. Matthews Holiness Church where he plays drums, organ and is a member of the choir. Ricky resides with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Jones at 323 Clay Street in Raeford. The Varsity Female Athlete of the Week is Delanita Pridgen, Dela, a 17-year-old, 5*5" junior is the point guard on the Varsity Girl's Basketball Team. Dela was nominated for her per ' formance in last week's game against Pinecrest. In the 52-36 con ference win over Pinecrest, Dela had 18 points and went to the boards for three rebounds. Dela is very involved in activities other than basketball. She is a member of the Spanish Club at school. She is a member of the choir at Buffalo Springs Church. She loves music and skating as hobbies. Dela plans to go to college to seek a degree in business ad ministration and plans a career in real estate upon completion of her education. Dela resides with her mother, Mrs. Bessie Pridgen at Route 3, Raeford. The Non-Varsity Female Athlete of the Week is Jackie Hunt. Jackie, a 15-year-old, 5*9" for ward on the girl's 9th grade basket ball team was nominated for her performance in last week's games. In the 65-54 victory over East Lee on Monday, Jackie scored 1 1 points and played a strong defen sive game. In the 54-44 victory over Lumberton on Thursday, Jackie had only four points but ac cording to Coach Spencer Samp son she "provided the defensive spark and hustle for the team." Jackie is a three sport athlete in that for the last two years at Up church she has played volleyball, basketball and softball. She plans to do the same thing at the high school this year. Jackie is an excellent athlete and was rewarded for her efforts last year by being honored as the MVP in Volleyball at Upchurch. Upon completion of high school, Jackie plans to attend col lege to obtain a degree in the Held of nursing. Jackie attends South Hoke Bap tist Church and resides with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James A. Hunt at Route 1, Red Springs. Recreation Bits Suns, All Stars, Scurlock Tigers Win The Men's Basketball League opened this week's schedule with the Suns defeating the Bullets 90-77. W. Love picked up 24 points, J. Quick had 14, S. Wallace - 15, and L. Black and R. McNeill added 12 each to lead the Suns in scoring. The Bullets were powered by the scoring of T. McPhatter with 24 points, H. McGregor had 17, and G. Baldwin and W. Blue tossed in 16 apiece. The second game of the night went to the All Stars as they downed Scurlock Tigers 90-78. G. Maynor had an outstanding game as he pumped in 44 points to lead the All Stars in scoring. Other high scorers for the All Stars wero-B. Leslie with 12, R. Maynor added 19 and Rob Maynor with 9. The Scurlock Tigers were led by N. McNeill with 21 points, K. Jones with 18, and N. McKoy added 14 more points. The action continued on January 18 as the Suns went up against Hollingsworth Bus Company. The Suns came out on top in this game as they downed Hollingsworth 78-62. R. McNeill led the Suns in scoring with 32 points, W. Love had 23 and J. Quick added 12 more. Hollingsworth was spurred by the shooting of L. McBryde, who tossed in 16 points, L. McDonald with 14, and K. McDonald and J. Carthens added 12 apiece. Capping of the action for the night it was the Scurlock Tigers taking on the Bullets. It was an easy victory for the Tigers as they destroyed the Bullets 85-53. The Tigers were led by the hot shooting of N. McNeill and G. Bratcher, who tossed in 20 points each. N. McKoy aided his team mates as he pumped in 17 points of his own. The Bullets leading scorers were G. Baldwin with 14 points, W. Blue and T. McPhatter with 12 apiece, and T. Melvin added 11 points. Motivational Recreation Program The following gyms will be available for free play basketball and other structured gym activities, beginning January 14.
