Tests Show Low Lead Levels At Second Illegal Dump Site T By Sherry Matthews I Tests taken at the second of two apparently illegal hazardous waste dumping areas in Hoke County have shown "low level" concen trations of extractable leads, Department of Human Resources (DHR) Solid and Hazardous Waste Engineer Richard Gay said Monday. A Soil samples taken from a site behind Virgil's Restaurant on U.S. Highway 401 show lead levels of 1 .8^0, Gay said. "That is a very low level of metal." he added. According to Hoke Health Director ' Lloyd Horne, the "cutoff" for extractable metals in [ the soil is 5.0?/o. "The samples we took indicate that the lead in the soil is well below the cut-off limit," Gay said. Test for Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB) in the soil at the Virgil's site and another area located at the old Big Star Truck Stop on Highway 401 showed that only "very low" levels of the cancer-causing substance were found. Both soil samples indicated that the sites were "well below" the PCB safe limits of 49 parts per million. Although all PCB and lead tests have been completed, both DHR and local health authorities are still "trying to determine*' who owns the two sites. "We are not sure at this point. but we will know before long," Gay said. "Even when we find out who owns the land, we will not require them to do anything," he added. "Based on the limits, there will be no clean-up requirements," Gay said. "We hope they will cooperate and disk lime into the soil, but it will not be mandated," he added. Although both sites contained small quantities of both PCB and lead. Gay said it was "nothing to worry about." "We are not aware of any real problems or complications at either site," Gay said. ? "Once we determine who is responsible for the sites, our in volvement will be over." he added. The News-Journal is like A Letter From Home Each and Every Thursday!
