School News Storyteller Visits Library Third and fourth grade students from McLauchlin Elementary School were entertained last Wednesday morning by Carol Walters, librarian and storyteller from Troy. Mrs. Walters read stories, poems, and told students about in teresting books they could find in the public library. The students were encouraged to visit the Hoke County Public Library and to have their parents get them a library card. Wednesday afternoon Mrs. Walters was the guest storyteller for two RIF programs at South Hoke Elementary School. Wanda Ingram, media specialist at South Hoke, coordinated the program with Elizabeth Burgess. Mrs. Walters again entertained the second graders with her special talent of making stories and poems come to life. NG State Honors Raeford Students ' Two Hoke County residents were among 2,298 students who earned Dean's List honors during the fall semester at North Carolina State University. Randy Ashburn and Chau M. Tran were honored for maintaining a "B-plus" average or better. Ashburn is majoring in civil engineering and is the son of Mr. r and Mrs. A.R. Ashburn of Wright Street in Raeford. Tran, wo is the son of C.V. Tran and C.H. Huynh of West Fifth Avenue in Raeford, is a physical mathematics and science major. Students from % North Carolina counties, 32 other states outside or North Carolina, and 20 foreign countries were among the students to achieve the honor. NCSU's enrollment is more than 22,500. To make the Dean's List, stu dents must earn an academic average of 3.25 or higher if they are carrying 15 or more hours, or 3.5 or better if they are carrying 12 to 14 hours. E. Carolina Honors Hoke Co. Students Four Hoke County residents were among students earning academic honors at East Carolina I University during the fall. Linda Rose Sizemore of Rt. 3 Raeford was named to the ''most elite of honors" by making all A's. David Earl Conoly, Carl Purcell, both of Raeford and Sally L. Maxwell of Shannon were nam ed to the honor roll. The honor roll includes students with a B average and no grade below C. Raeford Pair Receive Honors Susan Ashley Jones and Kevin Wayne Markham, both of Raeford, have been named to the Dean's List at University of North Carolina at Wilmington for the fall semester 1983. To qualify for academic distinc tion of UNCW, students carrying 12 to 14 hours must earn a quality point average of 3.5 or better with no grade lower than a B. Students carrying 15 or more hours must earn a 3.2 average with no grade less than B. Drinking Mothers Should Be Aware Fetus Problems The President and congress of '.he United States have proclaimed the week of January 15-21 as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Awareness Week. This week is meant to bring na tional attention to a serious health hazard for pregnant women and those likely to become pregnant. Excessive use of alcohol by women during pregnancy can result in a series of abnormaliiies in the newborn infant, called, the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). About one in 750 babies or bet ween three, and 6,000 babies per year ire born with FAS. Infants born with FAS usually have lower birth weight, physical defects, mental defects, growth disorders or any combination of these. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism has said the women who are preg nant or likely to become pregnant should be aware that drinking may have an effect on their baby. Since safe drinking levels are unkown, pregnant women and those likely to become pregnant should discuss their drinking habits and the potential dangers with their physicians or contact Ed Hamblin, a Substance Abuse Counselor at Sandhills Center, at 875-8156. DCBRA WINGER 8HWLEV Hoke Highlights By Donna Baker On February 1 at Richmond Sr. High, the district competition for Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) was held involv ing 15 Hoke High students. The group did very well. Angela Copeland took first place overall series in General Merchandising and second place in performance in General Merchandising. Deborah Taylor placed first in the comprehensive written exam on Restaurant Marketing. Proficiency certificates were awarded to Angela Copeland, Paula Locklear and Towanda Quick in General Merchandising, and to Deborah Taylor in Restaurant Marketing. These winners are eligible for state competition in Charlotte, March 15-17. Senior superlatives were an nounced Friday. They are: Most School Spirit - Alice Adkins and Gary Stephens; Most popular - m i Paulette Leggett and Barriet Easteriing; Best dressed - Vainette Walker and Preston Ross; Best looking - Angela McPhatter and Lowell Simmons; Most likely to succeed - Donna Oxendine and James Ward; Cutest - Sharon Harden and Marcus Virgil; Friendliest - Angela Copeland and James McQueen; Most humorous - Nicole Woriax and David Daniels; Most athletic - Jackie Thompson and Barriet Easteriing; Most in tellectual - Vickie McLean and James Ward; and Most talented - Mozella Bethea and Preston Ross. In basketball, the JV's lost to E.E. Smith by a score of 53-43 on Friday night. The Lady Bucks defeated E.E. Smith by a score of 55-43. The girls record is 7-1 in the conference and 12-4 overall. The Varsity boys lost in a close game by a score of 61-65 to E.E. Smith. jmm I Month of weather Weather has been the topic in Mrs. Sylvia Barkley's science classes for the past month. Students have been involved in making terrariums, wind vanes, annenometers, clouds and collages.
