... Funds brewing for downtown (Continued from page 1A) I to further revitilization efforts," he added. "Once you get people filling up the empty buildings, others will follow. People attract people," Fowlei; said. Both Fowler and the new ten nants preparing to re-open some of Main Street's desolate buildings, want to see downtown "alive again." "When 1 was young, 1 walked these streets. All the stores were full then," Anna Martinez said. Martinez is planning to open a restaurant in the old Cato's building. "I just want to do my part to make downtown better than it has been," Martinez said. "1 don't want this to be a ghost | town," she added. Martinez's plans include a "con servative atmosphere" with seating for SO to 60 people and "live entertainment." According to Martinez, the restaurant would stay open until after midnight. "I think we need a place downtown that does not close at five o'clock," Martiznez said. "We are not opening to com pete. We want to be a part of mak ing Main Street a better place," she added. Although Martinez has not com pleted the details of her restaurant, she plans to be open by late April or early May. "We are working real hard. We want to help liven up the streets again," Martinez said. "We need people on Main Street. Maybe this will help," she added. Further down Main Street, the old Marks Food Store is beginning to show new signs of life with freshly painted yellow parking slots being marked off for employee parking. Although no acitivityis going on inside the building, owner Buck McPhaul told The News-Journal that a government contracting agency has rented the building. Kings Point Manufacturing has rented since December but has shown no signs of moving into the Main Street facility. "At this point, I just cannot say when or if we will put anything in this building," Kings Point Manufacturing General Manager Thomas Tally said. "There is a strong possibility that something will happen, I just don't know when," he added. Although Tally's company chose the Main Street location, he refused to comment on why he chose the downtown area. "I'm not really sure why they wanted to locate on Main Street, but I feel like every building that is in use helps," McPhaul said. "Every vacant building we have hurts us that much more," he add ed. "If others see buildings filling up, they will be more interested in locating on Main Street," McPhaul said. Afternoon blooms As dogwoods begin to open their arms and unfold their beauty throughout Raeford, the city takes on a different more peaceful look.
