The final score of the champion ship game was 16-0, Upchurch. In six games, the Eagles went undefeated. In the game before their final match-up, the Eagles whipped Rohanen Jr. High 20-6. , The game before that saw Up church kick Rockingham again 26-6. Oustanding offensive players for the year are Johnny Maynor, Leon Melvin, Darrick Joy, Creg Johnson and Michael Morrisey. Defensive standouts for the year are Guy Morris, Leon Melvin, Creg Johnson, George Colborn, Richard Lide, Jamie Locklear, Jef fery McCollum, Jeff Huffman, Bill Upchurch, Terrance Havis, Jackie Locklear, Dedrick Graham and Rodney Thompson. Simpson on way regionals Hoke High's Wendy Simpson is on her way to Eastern Regional Tennis Championship after aveng ing her only loss of the regular season. Last Thursday, Simpson beat Mary Jac Riser, the only opponent to beat Simpson in regular season play, 7-7, 7-4 and 6-3 to win the girls' high school tennis sectional at Dark Branch Racquet and Swim Club. Simpson was ranked fourth in the section and Kiser was the top seed. Both girls go into the regional matches with 19-1 records. Simpson easily defeated second seeded Sheila Edwards, of Pine Forest, 6-1 and 6-3 in the semifinals of match play. That was Edward's first loss in 24 matches. Simpson and the three other semifinalists will advance to the regionals to be played in Goldsboro on November 7 and 8. Wendy is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Linwood Simpson. Dr. Simpson is principal of Hoke High. Carla Myers tapped for honorary group Carla June Myers of Raeford is among eight Peace College students recently tapped into Phi Theta Kappa, the national academic honor fraternity for junior college students. Carja, aJkarewphomoreJs the daughter of Mrs. Kay fi.'Myers of Phi Theta Kappa, the junior col- ' lege equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa, recognizes students in the scholastic upper 10 percent of the student body. All sophomore nominees at Peace have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 out of a possible 4.0. The college faculty members who select the nominees, also con sider the students' leadership and character attributes. Harriet Holloman of Wilson, president . of Peace's Phi Theta _Kappa_ chapter, conducted the tap-' ^ing ceremony. Assisting her were -Thapter vmembers whoymnmL*' long-stemmed red rose to each of those tapped. The ceremony took place in Peace's historic Dinwiddie Chapel. Peace is a Presbyterian junior college for women which offers associate degrees in liberal arts, business and music. State youth funds available Could your youth group or organization use financial assistance? If so, funds are available to assist youth groups in Hoke County in developing in novative community projects. If you're a member of a youth group or organization planning a worthwhile project for young peo ple, you may be able to receive a mini-grant from the N.C. State Youth Council to assist you. The North Carolina State Youth Council awards mini-grants to organizations three times each year. The deadline for accepting ap plications for these grants is Nov. 7. Awards are reviewed by the State Youth Advisory Council before being granted. The next application deadline for applying for grants is Jan. 2, 1985. The State Youth Council is a component of the Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office and works with youth councils across the state. Although the council advises existing councils and helps new ones get started, the grants are not restricted to youth councils.
