? ? ? Recruiting starts (Continued from page 1A) No such proposal was made of fidal by the City Manager or voted f on by the commission members. Also high on the agenda for the group is a proposed salary for an industrial dieveloper. The lowest salary paid developer in a nearby county is $23,000 in Montgomery County, Cowan said. According to Cowan and Phillips, there is not enough money in the present budget to pay ) a developer that much. Most counties in the area pay their developers an average of 49.39V? of their total budget in salaries, said Cowan. If the Raeford-Hoke Industrial Commission pays that percentage, a developer will be making $15, 805 per year, Cowan said. "You're not going to get a developer for that money," I Phillips said. " According to Cowan, the developer in Bladen County makes $30,648 per year, Pender County's developer makes $28,000 and Montgomery County's developer makes $26,600. For the first few years the com mission is in effect, a greater percentage of the total industrial commission budget may have to be put into salaries. Commissioner Frank Teal said. Commissioners were advised by Phillips to set the salary for the developer during the next meeting after funding has been settled be tween the city and county. In addition to the salary, a developer will probably have to be provided with a car, Phillips said. Elections for officers for the newly formed commission were held during the meeting. Although Tom Howell was ab sent from the meeting because of the birth of his first child, he was voted Chairman of the industrial commission by acclaimation. Frank Teal was voted as Vice Chairman of the commission. It was also decided in the meeting to let the county ad minister the Industrial Commis sion's budget. Administration of independent ly standing and operating boards and commissions are better ex ecuted by the county because they are set up to handle them already, said Phillips. vThe Sheriffs Department is an example of an independent depart ment, said Cowan. In other action during the meeting, coirimissioners voted to allow the Chamber of Commerce to go ahead and hire an executive secretary. For the remainder of this budget year, the salary of the secretary will come out of the S8.000 budgeted by the city for developmental purposes. Members of the commission also voted to set regular meetings on the second Tuesday of each quarter. To be held at City Hall, the meetings will begin at 7 p.m. Fire Association elects officers In an election last week, members of the Hoke County Firemen Association voted in new officers for the year 1985. Bobby Strother, of Pine Hill Fire Department was elected Presi dent. North Raeford had two members elected to positions. Johnny Baker was voted Vice President and Elwood Baker was elected Chaplain. Shepnan Chavis was made Secretary. Chavis is from the An tioch Fire Department. Jack Frazier, of Rockfish Fire Department was voted Treasurer. From Puppy Creek, David Willis was elected Parlamentarian. Around T own continued (Continued from page 1A) any profit in a parade. 1 have had some tell me this in years gone by. But it does bring people to the city and maybe they would return later to shop. This is just an assump tion. Anyway, there is a little kid in all of us and we all like a parade. ? ? ? Red Springs had a parade last Friday and called the day, "Ap preciation Day." It was to show appreciation for all the help they had received after the tornado earlier in the year. Many people helped clean up the town and many others donated money and food. The people there feel kindly towards their neighbors. Someone from Hoke County that attended the parade said that the Hoke High Band was not in the parade. They were wondering why they were not asked to take part when most bands from area schools did participate. I can't answer this, but maybe the answer can be found elsewhere in the paper. (See editorial). ? ? * The Christmas decorations on the streets of Raeford are as pretty as any that 1 have seen this year in other places. The Merchants Association, the City of Raeford and any others arc to be commended for the work in getting these decorations up and lighted. * ? * An article in this month's Na tional Geographic magazine about old US-1 was very interesting. It brough back memories of the many numbers that have been on US-401. Of course US-1 was the first and still carries the same number and the same route. The travel is less because of the In terstate. I can remember taking the cen sus for 1940 in Raeford and on one certain night going to the hotel and all the tourist homes to register folks enroute for the census. There are not many tourist homes left in the United States these days, but they were the place to stay in the 1930s and 1940s. Motels have now taken over. If you didn't see or read the arti cle, please do so; it will bring back memories. ? ? ? Have you stocked up on supplies for the football and basketball games that wil be coming up in the next few weeks on TV? If not, do so! . . . Break-ins plague county (Continued from page 1A) window in his house shot out last Wednesday. Jacobs reported that he was in bed when a loud noise disturbed him. Upon reaching another room in his house, Jacobs found the broken window, reports say. Raeford Police Chief Leonard Wiggins reported two storage shed thefts last week. Steve Coughlin reported a .22 calibre rifle with a scope and some hunting clothes taken from his storage shed. The total worth of the apparent ly stolen goods was $195, Wiggins said. Last Wednesday, Graham Monroe reported his storage shed broken into. Taken from the shed was an ice chest, two boxes of tools, a battery charger and an extension cord, reports say. The value of the items was about $312, Wiggins said. Last Tuesday, Linda Pilkington reported her billfold stolen from her pocketbook. According to Wiggins, the pocketbook was inside a filing cabinet in her classroom at Hoke High. Along with the billfold, a tape player was reported missing from the room. The billfold was valued at $56, Wiggins said. Raeford Plumbing and Heating had another battery stolen from one of their trucks during the last week of November, Wiggins said. According to the chief, the lock on the gate was cut. The battery was estimated at S50, reports say.
