Burgess named FMA headmaster
A Raeford man has been chosen
to take over the position of Head
master of Flora Macdonald
Academy.
Jack E. Burgess, currently an
Assistant Principal at J.W. Turl
ington Elementary School, will
take over operations for Eugene L.
McKethan, according to a letter
from the Flora Macdonald Board
of Trustees.
Burgess will begin at the school
on June 16.
"(The Board of Trustees) hired
me to administer the instructionals
program. I see that as the number
one priority," Burgess said last
week.
"Right off the bat, I don't plan
to change anything," said Burgess,
but the new headmaster does have

some plans for the school.
"I want to work on starting
some scholarships and getting
some endowments for the school,"
said Burgess.
Burgess will also be working to
get alumni involved with the
school "just to get a link to the
past," he said.
According to Burgess, one of the
reasons the school is so strong and
graduates such prepared students
is because of the good teacher
parent relationship.
"I will be working to build on
that also," he said.
Although there will be no
changes in the school for the first
semester of Burgess' tenure, he will
be working to establish some new
course offerings later, he said.
"It will be on a small scale, but
students need to be prepared for
college and the workforce," he
said.
Burgess has held various

teaching, coaching and ad
ministrative positions in his 13
years in education.
He is a certified school ad
ministrator and received his
master's and educational specialist
degrees from East Carolina
University.
Former resident chosen
as outstanding educator
Mrs. Jo Nicholas of Columbia,
Maryland and formerly of
Raeford, was chosen as one of the
15 Prince Georges' County
Maryland Outstanding Educators
for 1984-85 school year. Mrs.
Nicholas is a 5/6 grade teacher at
Springhill Lake Elementary School
in Greenbelt, Maryland. She was
nominated for her fine work by
fellow workers, students, and com
munity members.
Prince George's County has a
student enrollment of 105,500 and
employs 10,648. It is located on the
eastern outskirts of Washington,
D.C. and is the home of Andrews
Air Force Base, Goddard Flight
Center, Beltsville Agricultural
Center and the University of
Maryland.
Mrs. Nicholas' specific
achievements and outstanding ser
vices to students and programs of
Prince Georges County are being
grade level chairperson for levels 3,
4, 5, and 6; PTA Vice-President;
Person in charge of building in
absence of Principal; chaired and
assisted transition committees for
integration and consolidation of
schools; established guidelines,
scheduling, grouping, special
events of 5/6 .Team; Talented and
Gifted Coordinator; Science Fair
and Spelling Bee Coordinator; and
mainstreaming leader with Special
Education students.
Stanley J. Klein, Principal of
Springhill Lake Elementary
School, says, "Mrs. Nicholas is an
innovative, dynamic, motivator
who encourages students and in
stills in them a love of learning.
She possesses tremendous ability
to relate and interact effectively
with students and adults."
Mrs. Nicholas has also con
ducted inservice training for
regular and special education staff
members with Houghton Mifflin
Reading series. She has worked
with the county's Instructional Of
fice team to write Reading cur
riculum for the county's basal
reading series, Houghton Mifflin,
specializing in modified directed
reading activities for specific
language and reading disability
students.
Mrs. Nicholas has also assisted
in piloting and implementing the
first county's non-graded elemen
tary school program.
Jo is the former Myrle Jo
Burnett of Raeford.
She is married to Dr. Paul E.
Nicholas of Columbia, Maryland
and they have two daughters, Jen
nifer, age 13 and Amy, age 11.
Holt to attend Governor's Sch.
Clayton Walter Holt, a rising
junior at Scotland High School,
has been selected to attend Gover
nor's School - East at St. Andrews
College in Laurinburg for the 1985
session.
Clayton is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Bobby Holt of Laurinburg.
He is the grandson of Mr. and
Mrs. Walter J. Holt of Raeford.
Holt was selected in the area of
instrumental music. He ranked six
teenth in the state on French Horn
at the North Carolina Honors
Band Auditions held in Winston
Salem in March.
