Burlington Ind. wins award for helping Hoke Co . schools The Raeford Plants of Burl ington Industries were recognized for contributions to North Carolina public schools on Oct. 3, 1985, at an awards program spon sored by the North Carolina Business Committee for Educa tion. Burlington Industries was one of 15 companies in the state com mended by Governor James G. Martin and the Business Commit tee for Education. Sixteen outstanding teachers from around the state were also recognized. Wayne Peterson, President of Carolina Telephone, announced the winners while Gov. Martin and Jere A. Drummond, committee chairman and vice president for Southern Bell, presented the awards at an event held at the Jef ferson Standard Country Club in Greensboro. Funds for the ceremonies were provided by the 63 North Carolina firms which comprise the Business Committee. The Committee's main purpose is to improve the quality of educa tion in North Carolina. One of its main strategies is to encourage business and industry leaders, at the local level, to get involved in a partnership with schools in their areas. Burlington Industries has donated $18,730.80 for computer hardware and software to the Hoke County Schools. In addition to cash contribu tions, Burlington Industries has been deeply involved in a long range planning effort of the school system which has resulted in major improvements to the school system. Facilities, instructional programs, funding, and organiza tional patterns are all affected by this thrust. Burlington personnel have- been directly involved in efforts which have secured additional funding for the schools from county government. Including Burlington Industries, 15 North Carolina businesses were recognized for their contribution. They include Georgia-Pacific Corporation, Dudley and Asheboro; the Pitt-Greenville Chamber of Commerce; Cates Pickle Company, Faison; Westinghouse Electric Corpora tion-Control Division, Asheville; General Electric Corporation, Wilmington; United Carolina Bank, Whiteville; Vermont American Corporation; Lin colnton; Thomasville Furniture In dustries Inc., Thomasville; Duke Power Company, Charlotte; Roses Stores Inc., Henderson; Siecor Corporation, Hickory; First Bank, Troy; Wilkes Chamber Founda tion Inc., North Wilkesboro; and Wachovia Bank & Trust Com pany, Winston-Salem. The sessions last an hour and a half each. "Ninety-five percent of America's 53 million smokers want to quit but don't know how," ac cording to Shipley. "Many try but find it hard to avoid the pitfalls along the way." After a stressful day, for exam ple, someone trying to quit may reason that, "Just one cigarette will help me relax, and after thai, I won't smoke any more." "There may be certain times in the day when smokers crave a cigarette, such as with their morn ing coffee," he said. "We teach people how to combat the urge to smoke as they reduce their dependency on nicotinc." GRAHAM & CURRiE WELL DRILLING CO., INC.
