llplljpl JR. COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUS We know a little girl who was telling- the mother of a playmate about her little brother having been operated upon at the local hospital for acute appendicitis. After going into detail about his symptoms and how he was taken to the hos- pital and everything, she oom- pleted her statement with— "and his appendix was nearly inter rupted!" Which calls to mind the fact that in our family we have only one apepndix left where once there were four. WONDER WHAT HE MEANT? Walking down the street not so very long ago, we were hailed by some guy in an automobile who wanted to know—"where's the cornbread? I see the cracklin." Then he opened his mouth big enough to accommodate a base ball and laughed until every fen der on the car shook. His face was familiar to us, but we don't know what his name is. At first we couldn't see the joke, then it hit us rather forcibly that due to our rather lean (we never did like the word "skinny") ap pearance, he was comparing us to cracklings that some people use to make crackling bread. Can you imagine that? Now THE ELKIN TRIBUNE, ELKIN, NORTH CAROLINA perhaps you see how we suffer, when every silly looking person one passes on the street makes remarks about how we look. It's bad enough having to be careful not to fall in those little holes on the sidewalk that were put there to put flagstaffs in, without hav ing folks talk about you ks you pass by. If it wasn't that we'd have to buy a complete new out fit of clothes we'd get us some extra fancy vitamins and pick up some weight! CCC CAMP IS COMING Last Friday's morning paper confirmed the prediction made in this column over a month ago that the CCC camp at Dobson might be moved to Elkin. The news became official last Thurs day morning. No mention has been made at this writing as to the site of tra camp, the story saying it would be located so that water and sewerage would be available. In that case it will have to be close in, but where? When we talked to Lieutenant Hull, the commanding officer of the camp, six weeks ago, he men tioned a site near Klondike Farm However, the site in ques tion was valuable farm property and there's no water or sewerage facilities on it. The government leases the property upon which camps are located, paying one dollar in cash. However, all improvements made are left once the camp is moved. » ♦ * SENATOR HALL RETURNS Gene Hall, whose latest nick name is "Senator," recently re turned from a trip to New York, the World's Fair, Philadelphia, Washington, and Norfolk. We've talked with him at length, but at the present date we haven't quite reached Philadelphia. We did get to Norfolk, however, where Gene and his companions took a coastal steamer for New York City. They are telling that when Gene was registering at a Norfolk hotel, the hotel clerk no ticed that his friends were calling him "Senator." "And what state do you repre sent. the clerk asked "I'm Senator Hall from the State of Wilkes," Gene was said to have replied in his most pom pous manner. "Do tell," said the clerk, "and do you happen to have any sam ples of corn with you?" Gene said he had heard that Wilkes' corn was known all over the nation, but he didn't know it was really true. We've also heard that Senator Hall was very careful to stay in the middle of the boat on the way up the coast, fearful that it would tip over should he go over to the rail. However, it was just a small boat—only 300 and some feet in length and carrying only four or five hundred passen gers. ♦ * * THIS AND THAT We don't know how the weather will be when you read this, but we're sure having an early fall at this writing. ♦ * ♦ We didn't know it until the other night, but a doctor told us that calomel and bichloride of mercury are close kin. That's the reason calomel is always chased out of the system with rhubarb or salts or something. It's funny how many people who have a chance to witness an -operation, faint during the pro cess. A young fellow who was permitted to watch the operation for acute appendicitis on our boy the other week at the local hos pital, fainted dead away in the arms of a nurse. Still, there are worse places to faint in, ve guess. • • • Drop in and share a headache with us sometime. | PLEASANT HILL | Rev. I. W. Vestal filled his reg ular appointment Sunday.
