Thursday, October 26, 1939 NEWS FROM THE Dobson, Oct. 25.—Arrangements have been completed tor highway dedication of the new Mount Airy-Galax route, to be celebrat ed atop the Blue Ridge at Nor vale Crags, October 25. Gov. Clyde R. Hoey of North Carolina and Gov. James Price of Virginia, are scheduled to be the chief speakers of the occasion. Also on the program as outlined are Frank Dunlap, J. Gordon Hackett, Congressman Lon Folger, Congressman R. L> Doughton and Congressman T. G. Burch of Mar tinsville, Va. Mr. Woodruff of Mount Airy, and Mr. Landreth of Galax, are in charge of the mam moth barbecue which will be served at the noon .hour. A tre mendous crowd is expected to at tend. Rev. C. W. Russell is in attend ance at the Methodist Conference in session at the West Market Methodist Church in Greensboro. The B. T. U's. are sponsoring a campaign of organ izing B. T. U.'s. in a large num ber of churches in the Surry As sociation. Next session will be held in the Baptist church in Dobson, the fourth Sunday in November. Program in charge of Mr. Renegar, B. T. U. leader of the association. The School Fair, held in the Dobson school gymnasium Friday was a success, both in entertain ment and education. The exhib its from every grade in the school were considered exceptionally good, showing splendid work and progress under the teacher in charge. Mr. Joe Cox, teacher of the 7th grade, won first prize and Miss Edythe Reece, teacher of first grade, won second prize. The judges were Mr. H. S.. Broome, principal of White Plains school; Mr. J. M. McAdams, of Elkin school, and Mr. Sam Gen try, of Mountain Park. The always appealing "Bingo" stand was a great diversion for the school children, as well as others. There were numerous at tractions otherwise to catch the dimes and nickles for benefit of the school. The fair was well at tended by parents and others of scfcool interests. Jim Dan Hemmings of the State College at Raleigih. spent the week-end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Hemmings. Mrs. Lucky of Charlotte, spent several days last. Week with her daughter, Mrs. Clyde Forrest. Mrs. Sallie Folger is attending the Methodist Conference in Greensboro. and. visiting her daughter, Mrs. Sam Poole. Mrs. C. W. Smith, of Pilot Mountain, passed away Saturday afternoon, at her home, after a few days' illness. She had resided in Pilot Moun tain for many years. Miss Mary Betty Norman, who is spending the winter in Fair mont, a member of the school j faculty, spent Saturday with the family of Mr. and Mrs. W. B.' Norman. Mrs. Maude Freeman left Wed- j nesday to spend sometime wifchj her daughters, Misses Rachel andj Susan Freeman, in New York. Mr. and Mrs. Rogers and son, ! Ivey Gray, spent Saturday af-1 ternoon in Winston-Salem. Miss Mary Cooper of U. N. C., | Greensboro, spent last week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. j Grady Cooper. Mr. and Mrs. D. T. Sparger and Miss Margaret Sparger attended. a baptizing Sunday, the result of 1 a series of meetings held at Blue's Chapel by Mr. Delmer Hodge, | near Fish River. Mrs. Fred Lewellyn and Miss Lillian Harkrader of Greensboro, | were visitors in town Sunday. Announcement has been made | at Vanassa, Ontario, Canada, of the engagement of Miss Bonnie Mae Stanley, of Vanassa, to Mr. j Joseph Hobson, of Boonville, N. I C., the wedding to take place the 1 last of October. THURMOND Of interest to many friends of Miss Rhocfenia Kennedy is her marriage to Ray Jarvis of Win ston-Salem. The newly weds are making their home in Winston- Salem at the present. A large pick-up crowd from •here motored to Elkin last Sun day night and attended the re vival services which have been in progress there for the past two weeks, but which have now closed. We are glad to note the im/- provement in the condition of Mrs. Eva Cockerham, who has re cenely undergone a major oper ation at Hugh Chatham hospital. We hope for her a speedy recov ery. Mr. Lee Holcomb, member of the CCC camp at Laurel Springs, visited his parents here last week end. Mr. Thomas Moody of Win ston-Salem, spent the week-end here with his wife and children, and other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Pruitt of Jonesville, visited the latter's mother here last week. Leonard Smithey of this place, has enrolled in the CCC camp at Laurel Springs. Everyone is invited and espe cially urged to attend prayer meeting tonight (Thursday). An interesting program is planned. Rev. S. M. Stikeleather, district superintendent, is to speak and a great time in the Lord is expect ed. Come k and bring others. A large number from here at tended the singing at Roaring Gap church last Sunday evening. Mr. Lesse Fowler's mother, of Ashe county, is visiting him here now. Mrs. Ellen Wilmoth is spending sometime with her son, Calvin, in Union Hill community. Miss Chalmer Simmons is spending sometime in North Wil kesboro. taking a course in beauty culture. Come out to Sunday school next Sunday at Thurmond. MOUNTAIN VIEW Miss Ferlie Mae Shore of Jon esville, was the week-end guest of her cousin. Miss Nancy Shore. Rev. J. L. Powers filled his reg ular appointment at Mountain View Baptist chux-ch Sunday and Sunday night, October 22. The church unanimously re-elected him as pastor and hope to be honored by his pastoral service for the coming year. Mr. Orie Harris of Longtown, was the Sunday dinner guest of his brother, Mr. Truman Harris. Mr. and Mrs. Tildon Byrd of High Point, were the week-end guests of Mrs. Byrd's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Van Hoy. Mrs. Lee Shore recently visited her sister, Mrs. Ruth Mickle, of Jonesville. Chinese checkers were played, with Mrs. Jones Todd and Mrs. Miles Shore tying for high score. Mrs. Hal Bell won second high. The honoree was the recipient of many lovely gifts.
