News Events From Our Nearby Communities • Mulberry Mr. and Mrs. Sebastin South ard had as their week-end guests, Mrs. John Lewellyn and Miss Bertha Jewell Hemmings of Dob son, and also as Sunday guests, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Don Hemmings of Mountain Park. Mr. and Mrs. Columbus Riggins had as their Sunday guests, Mr. and Mrs. Reelie Cooke and Miss Nellie Bryant of Cross Roads. Misses Ruth and Martha s Southard spent the week - end with Misses Lillian and Edith Collins of Zephyr. Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Southard and family spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Southard at Union Cross. Boyd Stanley of Camp Polk, La., is spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Stanley. Robert Garvey Burchette left Sunday morning for Camp Polk, La., after spending nine days here visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Burchette, and other relatives and friends. A large number of folks from here attended the Fifth Sunday Singing at Pleasant Home Bap tist church Sunday afternoon. The choirs from Ronda Baptist church and Ronda high school took part in the singing. Miss Phyllis Holcomb of Wash ington, D. C., arrived here Mon day morning for a few days visit with her mother, Mrs. J. S. Hol comb and other relatives and friends. Mrs. R. L. Church is quite ill at her home here. Her many friends are wishing for her a speedy and complete recovery. Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Pardue and son, Alton, visited Mrs. Pardue’s mother, Mrs. R. L. Wooten, and other relatives in Jonesville Sun day afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Edwards and son, Steven, also, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Jones pf Elkin visited Mrs. M. C. Jones Sunday after noon. • Dobson, Route 2 Pvt. Camille White of Camp Fannin, Texas, arrived Saturday to spend a few days furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lin coln White. Mrs. L. C. Bray spent the week end near Boonville, the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Spainhour, the latter her sister. Kermit Lewis and Miss Myrtle Riggs, of this route, were recently married. Mrs. Lewis is residing with her parents while her hus band is in the armed services. Mallory Bray of Baltimore, Md., visited his brother, L. C. Bray, here, over the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Hubert White and family of Union Cross, visit ed relatives here Sunday. Ray Bray spent Monday night of last week with his aunt, Mrs. Kizzie Martin, of Salem Fork. Mrs. C. C. White and children, Charles, Kathleen and Brenda, visited relatives at High Point last week. Marvin and Clifford White spent last week in High Point, the guests of relatives. Mrs. Claude Hardy and daugh ter, Georgia, and Miss Agnes Hardy spent Saturday afternoon in Elkin, shopping. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Childress and family spent Sunday near tJnion Cross with Mr. and Mrs. Grover Childress and family. • Rockford Mrs. J. T. Burrus and Miss Glenn, of High Point, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Holyfield and Mr. and Mrs. Rob ert Burrus Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Snow and children were the all-day guests of Mrs. C. B. Davis and Mr. and Mrs. John Burrus Sunday. Mr. and Mi's. A. G. McCormick and family, of Winston-Salem; Miss Elizabeth Booker of Greens boro and Mrs. Rosa Booker of Dobson, were the dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Thore Sun day. O. Maguire was the speaker for the 11 o’clock service Sunday, using as his theme “The Empty Tomb.” The message was great ly enjoyed by all. Louis Petree, superintendent of the Sunday school, was in charge of the even ing service. Rev. W. S. Luck of Winston-Salem, was present for the evening service, also, and made an inspiring talk. The pastor, Rev. David W. Day, is expected to return the latter part of the week from Vass, where he is conducting a series of meetings. The regular Wednesday evening prayer service was held with Le Roy Luffman in charge. Mr. and Mrs. Avery Couch spent the week-end at Roaring River, the guests of the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pardue. J. S. Griffith of Eunice, is spending a few days with his daughter, Mrs. Raymond Raye. Mr. and Mrs. George Casste vens and son, Alvin, of Boonville, were the Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Eads. Pvt. Top bull brought $1,000.00 and top female $1,600.00. A bill has been introduced in Congress to do away with day light saving and return to the old system. Mrs. Maynard Harris with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim White, of State Road, attended the bap tisimal service at Elkin Valley Sunday afternoon. • Mountain Park Members of the Junior class of the Mountain Park High School delightfully entertained the Sen ior class, faculty members, mem bers of the school board, and other school officials and friends at thd annual Junior-Senior ban quet, held at the Gilvin Roth Y. M. C. A. in Elkin, on Wednesday evening, April 26. Throughout the course of the evening the army motif was car ried out in the program, decora tions and menu. Places were marked with miniature army dress caps. Miss Peggy Wolfe, junior class president, acted as toastmistress for the occasion. Guests at the banquet were presented various ratings and insignias In accord ance with their ranks at school. The program was in keeping with the army idea in that toasts were given to the people holding different ranks. Chaplain Walter Calloway offered the invocation. Awards and presentations were made by Miss Mary Ruth Callo way. Mi-, and Mrs. J. T. Thompson of Lowgap, were the Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Mayes. Mr. and Mrs. D. E Frazier of Statesville, visited Mr. and Mrs. D. O. Calloway on Sunday. A number from this community attended the Sunday School con vention held at Fairview Baptist church last Sunday. Earlie Harris, recently ar rived to spend a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Harris. Pfc. Harris has been serv ing overseas, and will return to Fort Jackson, S.
