Railroad, the Ral eigh and Augusta Air Line, the Wilson Snort Cut and the Carolina Central, say that the crops are fine every where and the people have plenty of money. This is good news. WHO WANTS AN ELEPHANT? There is said to be an elephant for tale in Greensboro, shipped here from High Point. Such an animal could not have arrived here at a more sea sonable juncture but the 'idea of sup plying the wants of this city in a retail way is simply preposterous. , Just to think of it! Only one elephant to tspply our whole population, where it would require a whole gross of lhm to go found. Imagine only one . fam ily in town with an elephant and all the rest without it would work badly. Either send on a good assortment of elephants or give us none. ' FIFE AT MOORESVILLE " iThe news fjom the meeting' being held by Evangelist Fife at Mooresville is, that about 2500 persons attended the service on eiunday morning. Al though the attendance- was not so Urge, on Monday, the interest was growing, and one hundred persons gave the Evangelist their hands in to ken of their, purpose to lead a new life.: : ; y?m"c.". ; 1 All men are invited to the ser:ce tonight at 8 o'clock. Rev. G.' W. Callahan, will be present and maice an address. - DIRECT. IMPORTATION. Our reporter saw today at T. W- Scott and Go's a case (1 a tins) oi Peek, Freani and Co's genuine London bis cuit, bought of tHera direct through theif agents in New -York. The goods are beautiful and nice.' " SUICIDE ON THE TRAIN. A young gentleman, Walter Hester, who was here yesterday, and who took the night train for Winston, shot him- dea'd with a Distol between Ker. nersville and Winston. f He had-just been asleep and was lying down when the rash act was done. Mr. John H. Hester, father to Walter Hester, will be remembered as -having taken his own life a number of years ago , at Kernersville, under depression from business' troubles,' as it was then thought. The mother of the young man lives in Winston, for whom sin- cere sympathy is felt. PLAID MILL MEN. A meeting of Southern plaid - maini facturCrs occurs at Charlotte today, at which the Evening News says there will be members from several Of the southern states to transact important business. . PRINCE OF GOOD FELLOWS. A man may be known as a "prince of good fellows," and yet 'be in . fact no good. The appellation is mislead ing in many instances. TRINITY COLLEGE CORNER J'.': STONE CEREMONIES. - From Mr R TGray, who was pres. ent during the ceremonies of laying the comer stone of. the new Trinity College building at Durham yester day, and took part in the same, it is learned that the occasion was one of deep interest, and that everything passed off in good style. Gen R. B, Vance and ex-Goyemor Jarvis made attractive and able speeches, business was suspended and a long procession moved out along Main Street to the campus where the platform had been erected. . . , It was a great day both for Durham and for Trinity College A-baggage car on the C F. & Y..V. Railroad caught fire yesterday from the engine and came near being de stroyed. It occurred down the roaa. St. GOOD NEWS FROM CEDAR FALLS CIRCUIT. Rev John H. Totten, who is the Methodist Protestant pastor of this work has written at least three several times, briefly each time, of the pro gress cf the meetings under his charge. He says under the date of October 29th: , Our meeting at Bethany is a grand success. Thirty five souls have professed faith in Christ and the same number have joined the church and been baptized. Last night the altar was crowded with penitents. The house is too small by half for the con gregations. We will continue here until Sunday and then move the meet ing to Worthville, by request of the manager of the factory there, and con tinue until the last of next week. All who read this will please pray for the success of our meeting at Worthville every day next week. We had. one meeting there sometime ago at which there were twenty-two converts, and now they wish me back. Writing again on the 31st of - Octo ber, he says, "There were 47 "conver sions and 50 accessions to the church at our Bethany meeting this week, and still the meeting goes on. All glory to God" Then again, Nov. 3rd, he writes from Worthwhile, that the meeting at Betha ny clotted the evening before wijh 70 conversions and 73 accessions to the church, 58 at Bethany and 1 5 at Worth ville. ' ' ; v " . - ' ' T?"X2it!higlit I 'commenced another meeting at Worthville on the evacge listic order. After preaching 16 penitents came forward and 7 - were converted. I then received the names of all who wished to join .ny church fifteen gave their names tor the Methodist Protestant, 3 for the Baptist and a for the Presbyterian church. Some of these were converted at Bethany. ' We expect to continue this meeting eveiy night till Saturday night. Please publish this in the Workman as well as in the. Central Protestant, so that all who read it may be encour aged to continue in prayer for us. We count 153 converts on this circuit and it; accespions , to the church. AU glory to God." ; V; RIOT AND BLOODSHEIl :AT A CELEBRATION,.' ' At Fairmount, Indiana, - on the nieht of the ' 8th while the Derao- crats were celebrating their victory, and the procession was moving along the principal street, a powerful negro ran into the procession, brandishing a club and a revolver, and commenced firing and striking right and left. Al Powell, a white teamster, was shot and instantly killed. ; The account goes on to say.- The greatest excitement en sued. A score or more shots were fired, and the engagement threathened to become general Four negtoes were also wounded. The colored rnan who startod the riot, and whose name cannot be ascertained, was shot twice in the back after he had killed Powell. He was placed under arrest and take to jail, with the mob howling at his heels. Reports from Faiimouut are to the effect that there are fears of a lynching. Sheriff McFeely of this city has gone to the scene of the rioJ and will endeavor to protect the prisoner.
