I have iKken of frugality and econ omy as important factors hi AmcncaA life. I find iio fault tiiU the accumu lation of wealth, and am glad to see energy and enterprise receive their fair reward. Rut 1 Itclieve that our Government in its natural integrity, is exactly suited to a frugal and ecu nomical people; and I believe it is S'fct in the hands of those who have lccn m.id strong jnd stlre'iirit in tne.r ritienship, by scu-ucmal an i ly the surroundings of an enforced econ omy. Thi.ft and careful watchfulness of expenditure among the people tend to secure a thrfty goernment; and cheap and careful living on the prt of individuals ought to enforce economy in the public expenditures. The foregoing is taken from the speech of Grover Cleveland at the 77th birthday anniversary ot Senator Thurman, at Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 13th. Without stopping to inqu'te or to express an opinion, as to whether "cheapness and economy" have been "flippantly derided'' in any quarter, we would simply express admiration for the wisdom shown by the ex-President in what he says about "fruga'ity and economy." He has simply taken in the situation as it exists wilh eight tenths of the American ' people, an l has put himself in sympathy with them It is a fact that theie has beeu for some time a tendency in certain quar ters, without regard to 'party affilia tions, to ignore thfc condition to which Mr Cleveland refers, and to live and to spend as though everybody was rich and all the poor people who had any need for frugality and economy were deid and buried. And it is ao true that where there is great wealth it has not been earned except by thi ; derided frugality and economy. In the shops and factories, in the', mines ana on tne lanns tms nas ocen ine condition on which the pre faction of wealth has been effected. ; 1 "I believe.". says Mr Cleveland, .'fh, nnr Onvernment. in its natural intrirv. is exactlv smted to a ' frusal and economical people;" and Mr Cleveland, doubtless, states a fact, and opens up a wide field for discussion. O il 1 ' It may pe claimed, too, with entire truth, that the best people on earth, the most trustworthy and reliable, and also the happiest, are the frugal and economical. Getting away from the home where he was taught to obseWe the principles of frugality and economy, and attempting to ape the , ways , of the large spenders of money in what has been called polite society, many a young man has become, a defaulter or a forger and has gone down with his family int- ruin We lnnve to., o'hers more competent the task of d.scussing Mr Cleveland's great speech in all its bearings. , " - Y. M. C. A. Dr. WV Dixofy Pres. of Greensborp Female College, will give an address tonight at 8 o'clock. Mr Dixon is a very interesting speaker, and our young men will prdfit much by hearing him.J "" The service tomorrow afternoon at 5 o'clock will be - conducted by Mr. Samuel Brown;, all men are invited. A Book reception will be ' held on Tuesday night next; and all friends of the work "are repuested to plan to be present ' The progTam for the oc casion will appear later. .-., ; ' Now., Subscribe for the Workman.
