THE POLK COUNTY NEWS. W. C. CORCORAN, Publisher. -. SUBSCRIPTION RATES: One Year, . . . . ... I1-00 Six Months, ... . .. . -5 Three Months, . . y . - -2S Always in Advance. PHONS XTc. 3. THURSDAY. DEC. 13, 1906. - NORTH CAROLINA DAY. Tomorrow is North Carolina Day in the public schools through out the state and will bej obser ved with appropriate exerc ises in every school-hose. This is a wise plan on tlie part of the school authorities, as there is no greater inspiration for school boys and girls than the study of biographical history and we hope this feature of school work is not confined to special days. Biography is an interesting study and appeals to ambitious boys ajnd girls. Of course we can- not air be great, but every boy . . and girl should have an high ' - ideal and make some famous man or woman their hero and strive to emulate tHeir example remem berjng that in most cases the career of their herb was begun amid circumstrnces tnat were most unfavorable yet this very fact was t the greatest stimulus .. totieroic efforts and what has been done can be done again. Success is the result of concentrated effort, the foundation, is work and the keystone, attainment. Set some task for yourself, let your ideal 1 1 ! j' V .1 l.fl' ue nip, ana nustie wmie you wait. Therein lies true greatness. me acmevements oi (Jnas. JJ. Mclver were far-reaching and thte good he did can never be estimated as it will live forever in lives of those whom he taugh and inspired with something of his own enthusiasm for the great work which was bis whole aim .and object in life. But in paying tribute to Dr. Mclver's greatness shall we for get the thousands of teachers all over North Carolina who are doing a noble work for the boys and girls of the coming genera tiony Teaching is a most noble proff ession, altho poorly paid and hardly appreciated, yet the teacher wields an influence second only to that of the home and if a teacher is interested in his or her work, beyond the mere dollars and cents which they are to receive they are fulfilling a mission of true greatness. We have in mind two teachers in this county, and we are sure I' .i . .. mere are otners, who have a n high sense of the importance of their work and who do not "quit work" when the hour for dis missal comes. They mke known the needs of their school to the pa trons, who co-operate, with them and tangible results follow as they always will when one goes at anything with a fixed deter mination. All honor then to Miss Maggie .Haguelof the Poplar Grov e school and Prof. Branon of the Tryon school. May their tribe increase. "The reward is in the doing." COUNTY COMMISSIONERS MEET.
