CHILDREN'S NOOK RIBBON CUTTING - Ceremonies were held last Wednesday, October 20. for Mount Olive's new chil dren's clothing store called The Children's Nook. "y Klllatta Nine portraits of Duplin County's leading citizens were painted and hung in tho courthouse during the early 1900s. Most of the portraits were painted by a Faison native. Mary Lyde Hicks Williams. A" but one of these por traits still hang in 'he Duplin courthouse. One portrait. James Menzies Sprunt, now hangs at James Sprunt Technical College. Outlaw, register of deeds. The portraits are of Thiynas Stephen Kenan. James Menzies Sprunt. Ben jamin Franklin Grady, John Miller Faison. Stephen MilleT. William Anderson Allen. John Dickson Stan ford. William James Houston and John Nicholas Stalling. ALONG THE WAY con cludes its publication of the biographical sketches of these leaders with the his torical data of James Dickson Stanford, William James Houston and John Nicholas Stalling. John Dickson Stanford was 'born about two miles south of Kenansville. March 12. 1833. He completed an education in law and was admitted to the bar. after which Stanford located a practice in Kenans ville. He was elected as Duplin's representative to the State House of Commons in 1858. only two years after establishing his law practice. From his election to the State House of Commons in 1858 until 1886 Stanford served as a representative in the State House or Senate. As a rep resentative. Stanford showed a particular interest in state institutions and confederate soldiers. Approximately 1885 he gave up the practice of law to become a Presbyterian minister and served in that capacity until his death. During his work as a minis ter. the Reverend John D. Stanford organized several churches in Duplin and other counties. Stanford died at his home in Kenansville, Jan uary 24, 1901 and his grave stone bears the title of his favorite hymn, "We will meet in that sweet bye and bye." William James Houston was born near Kenansville in 1828. Houston studied law and became a member of the bar. He located a practice in Kenansville about 1850. In 1853, Houston was elected solicitor for the Duplin court and served until July, 1854 when he resigned to become a member of the State House of Commons. He served as a representative to the State Senate during the 1856 and 1858 sessions. Early in 1859. Houston became state solici tor of the Second Judicial District and served until the beginning of the Civil War. Houston enlisted in the con federacy during the begin ning of the Civil War and became Captain of Company I, Ninth North Carolina Cavalry Regiment. During a battle near Ashby's Gap or Upperville, Virginia. June 21. 18b3, Houston was killed in action. John Nicholas Stalling was born at Hallsville in Duplin County February 10, 1832. Stalling attended the state university and studied law. He was admitted to the bar and located a law practice in Kenansvialle about 1857. During his first year as a lawyer, Stalling was elected solicitor of the county court and served as solicitor in the state court during the absence of the regular offi cer. In 1860 he was ordained as a minister in the Baptist Church and for many years he worked as both lawyer and minister. At the close of the Civil War, Stalling or ganized and directed the local police force. He also served as a member of the ?>iaic constitutional conven tion of 1875. About 1884 he gave up the practice of law and devoted his full time to educational and ministerial work and two years - later moved to assume the posi tion of president of Thomas ville Female College. During his presidency at the college. Stalling served as pastor for a number of nearby churches and filled the position of Moderator of the South Yad kin Baptist Association for about 18 years. Stalling died in Salisbury. February 2. 1913. Soak cut apple pieces in salt ed water for ten minutes. They'll remain crisp longer and won't turn brown. BEULAVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT ? CHARLIE ALBERTSON DAY was October 24 from 3-5 p.m.'at the East Duplin High School in Beulaville. The program featured Charlie Albertson and his band and many other special guests.
