Some flowers that bloom in the spring call for a winter workout on the part of the home handyman such aa building a hotbed for starting seedlings A basement window facing south provides a fine location for such a miniature conservatory. The hot bed is designed to fit right into the window and to be nailed to the window frame. The basement window is kept open to provide warmth for the seedlings, while a new window is placed outside of the areaway at an angle to cap ture the sun's rays. An inexpensive thermometer, fastened inside of this hotbed, will indicate any need of ventilation. It's easy to frame this hotbed to the dimensions of your base ment window by using 2 by 4s and 2 by 2s supporting a "skin" of tem pered hardboard 3/16ths inch thick. To form a seat for the hinged slanting window, 1 by Is are nailed around the frame. Hard board wings and top are built to fit into the window opening to seal off cold drafts from the sides. Outside of the window well, the hardboard sides and front are car ried down and embedded in the soil to a depth of at least 1% inches to form a seal around the structure. After priming, the outside of this hotbed can be painted to match the trim of your house. When properly used, this con trivance can give you vigorous plants long before seeds begin to sprout out of doors. Lizard Fossils Tell Age Story Los Angeles (AP) ? Fossils of lizards and frogs tell more oi pre ice age climate than the bones of mastodons and sabre tooth tigers, says a zoologist. Large animals could easily walk away from an ad vancing glacier, but it might take a lifetime for a small lizard to crawl out of a large valley, Bayard Brattstrom, zoologist at the Uni versity of California at Los An geles, reasoned. Thus bones of small animals unable to get away tell more about the climate of a particular area than those of more mobile beasts. Studying small fossils from the La Brea tar pits, the zoologist de termined that 50,000 years ago the Lost Angeles basin was a grassy woodland covered with large oak and walnut trees, with probably less rain than it has now. Ponds and streams existed, however, since bones of turtles, frogs and toads were found in the tar. Fossil lizards and snakes in Ne vada caves indicate the Las Vegas area 10,000 years ago was a des ert, but not as dry as now. Bratt strom said one million years ago Florida had a subtropical climate ? reptiles and amphibians found there survived the inundating ice in more northern areas. PHONI 6-4071 WOttHlAD CTTY. N. C.| North Carolina Participates In National Courtesy Crusade "failure to share the road with J others is a dangerous threat to safe- 1 ty on our streets and highways," Major C. A. Speed, director of the Motor Vehicles Department's High way Safety Division said today. The application of common sense courtesy on the part of drivers would do a iot to reduce accidents, he pointed out. Speed chose these words to stress the importance ol highway courtesy which the Motor Vehicles Depart merit and cooperating local agen cies are emphasizing in March. "Many traffic accidents occur when drivers are straddling the center line of the road, or when they neglect to yield right of way to pedestrians or other drivers at intersections," Speed declared. It is just common sense too. and courtesy, for drivers to dim their lights when they approach or fol low other cars at night, he said. "And it is common sense, and courtesy, to drive at a safe speed for road, traffic and weather condi tions," Speed explained, "because an unsafe speed endangers the lives of pedestrians and other mo torists. If you lose control of your car those innocent, as well as your self, may suffer from your haste." With the proper attitude of shar ing the road with others, these dis courteous, unsafe practice! would disappear, according to Speed. Referring to last year's fatal mo tor vehicle accidents. Speed laid they indicated that the following list of courteous acts mutt be con sidered basic to safe driving: 1. Share the road by driving in the proper lane. 2. Allow ample clearance when passing. 3. Yield the right of way to oth er driven ... to pedestrians 4. Give proper signal* for stop* ?? ? 1 - ? ? ? ? and turns. 5. Dim headlights when meet ing or following vehicles 6. Respect traffic iawa, signs, signals and road markings. 7. Adjust driving to road, traf fic and weatiier conditions. "AM these points are summed up ia the slogan being publicised in this nation wide program," Speed said. He urged everyone to remember and act on the slogan, "Make Ceur tsy Your Code of the Road."
