Actor Discusses Monroe, Chivalry, European Women By SANDkA NgMSER AP Newsfcatures Writer The Marilyn Monroe Doctrine is ended, says Mel Ferrer, Broad way'! "Knight in Shining Armor." Ferrer, who playi, "the most beautiful man in the world" in the stage hit "Ondine," feels the cur rent trend is for simple, direct, unaffected women, personified by such actresses as Audrey Hepburn, Leslie Caron and Grace Kelly. Interviewed in a New York rest aurant, Ferrier ate oxtail soup and one lambchop and said that chiv alry was not dead. Men want sim ple women and women want good and courteous men. The twice divorced actor says if wives would take a second look at their hus bands, they would find: , "Most men ARE knights in shin ing armor " Princeton ? educated Ferrer feelf "there are a lot o( good people in this world, particularly in thia country." American men ? and women ? are more reaponaible, conscientious, and care more about family improvement. One flaw in the American home' picture, says the tall, dark-haired actor, is the modern career wo man. She tries to compete with men and places too much empha sis on a career. Ferrer, from Kberon, N. J., holds European women have a sounder, more realistic approach to life. He says Italian actresses are satisfied to be in the theater spotlight for five years and then get married. He adds, however, that Italian stars have a tendency to get fat TOorehead "CARTERET'S FINEST THEATRE" STARTS SUNDAY | Out or thi duct or toegieat Pioductd by ROBtBT L JMXS Oirfcttd by HUGO fKGOHESE Scr#*n PUj b i SWSlf BOtHM * M<MMUMiC ItitiiM If 1M? ilNIUHT fOX < BANCROFT BOONE LEE MARVIN ?beaufortc:;:? Quick-witted and intelligent, Ferrer likes the medieval age he portrays both in "Ondine" and in the movie "Knights of the Round Table." He says knighthood is popular with Americans ? espe cially teen-agers ? because it pre sents a clear case of good versus bad. "Americans are idealists," he says. "They are all interested ih setting the world right." Ferrer, 36, has been writer, di rector, producer, dancer and actor for screen, stage and radio. He is often mistaken, because of his last name, for actor-director Jose Fer rer. There's no connection, but it doesn't help any that Mel's father and brother, both doctors, are named: Jose Ferrer. Japan Creates 97 New Cities Since Last Year Tokyo (AP) ? All it takes to cre ate a city in Japan is to sign up 30,000 people. It doesn't matter much where they come from. More than 97 new "cities" have sprung up recently. Since last December -943 towns and villages have been swallowed up. Newly-born Tamana on southern Kyushu embraces two towns, 10 villages and assorted farms stretch ing over 13 miles. The Japanese government is En couraging the move as a step to ward greater efficiency and easier administration. Local politicians lost no time spreading the word. Soon most of Japan's 87,000,000 people may be living in cities. But the cows, pigs, chickens and oxen will hardly notice the change. Cherry Point Sergeant Develops Parachute Aid Cherry Point. N. C.? The imag ination and ingenuity of M/Sgt. Verl K. Nelson, of Marine Instru ment Training Squadron -20 here has led to the development of a new type parachute harness. This new type harness transfers the location of the bulky life raft kit. ordinarily worn on the chest of the old type harness, to a posi tion where it may be used as a seat pack. Worn on all over-water flights, if the emergency arises, the individual can quickly bail out and descend in a sitting position rather than hanging by the harness straps as with the old type. After hitting the water, this new installa tion is easily disassembled allowing the individual to move quickly and efficiently. Master Sergeant Nelson, now serv ing as noncommissioned officer in charge of Marine Training Group 20's parachute loft, received a let ter of appreciation in June from Major General Clayton C. Jer ome. Commanding General. Air craft, Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic, for the development of this safer and more mobile-type harness. The letter was presented to Ser geant Ifelson by Lieutenant Col onel J. W. Naval Aux iliary Air Station, El Centra, Calif. After the harness was successfully tested, the Bureau released specif ic instructions for the adoption of this new type harness in the near future. Man Perfects Standing Float VII iUI :hing a t of the \ South Haven, Mich. (AP) ? Most anyone can float, says Iver John son. but when you can float stand ing up you've accomplished some thing. > Johnson has been clocked float ing in a vertical position for 20 minutes without twitching muscle. "It's 99 per cent control spine," said the 47-year-old retired accountant. "When the spine is straightened from its usual curved position to a perfect plumb line, prou float vertically. Of course, the mind must be absolutely serene ? otherwise you'd sink," he said. Johnson swims about a mile out into Lake Michigan to practice. It took him 12 years to master it. "Think it's easy?" says Johnson. "Try it some time." EAST DRIVE-IN THEATRE OM-Half an* laat ?f Oa Highway Ti It TWO SHOWS NIGHTLY LAST TIMES TONIGHT -aoMANCt . . . fAfnm ?
