pfc. Billy Downum spent the weekend at home. Mrs. Downum returned with him Sunday to Fort Jackson. S. C., where he is sta tioned. Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Williamson of Roanoke Rapids spent Monday and Tuesday with Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Seott, before leaving for Fort Worth. Tex., to make their home. Beaufort PTA Plans Fall Carnival On School Grounds Wednesday The Beaufort PTA will sponsor a fall carnival Wednesday, Oct. 20. ? beginning at 5 o'clock in the af lei noon, the ways and means chairman announced Tuesday night at the PTA meeting in Beaufort School. The carnival will feature pony and cart rides, jeep rides, a merry go-round, movies, booths for grab bags, fish ponds, pick a duck, ring toss, a shooting gallery, candied ap nles. pop corn, and food booths which will sell hot dogs, hamburg er. barbecue, chicken salad, potato salad, ham. baked beans, trench fried potatoes, pies, cakes, candy, ice cream, soft drinks and coffee. Each booth will be sponsored by classrooms with the grade moth ers in charge. The carnival will be held on the school grounds, continuing until 7:30. At 7:30 there will be a cos tume parade in the school auditori um. An amateur hour, with school students taking part, will be held in the auditorium from 8 to 9. Prizes will be awarded the winner of the costume parade and the am ateur hour. J. (). Barbour Jr., reported for I (?ray Hassell, grounds chairman, I that permanent lights had been in stalled on the outside of the school building to light the grounds for school carnivals and for parking facilities, lie also announced that an electric outlet box was being in stalled on tbc building to take care of extra wiring, and that Mr. Has sell had drawn up plans for perm anent booths to be used in future carnivals. Mr. Barbour, treasurer, reported a balance in the bank of $505.22. Mrs.Street Wetherington reported ! $143 made on the luncheon which j was served at the district woman's club meeting in September. Mrs. Vic Bcllamah reported 318 mem bers in the 1*TA as of Tuesday night and Mrs. Clarence Guthrie reported 128 grade parents for the classrooms. At the beginning of the meet ing, the members of the PTA Rave Coach Hugh Gordon a rising vote of thank.s for a fine football game played by his team last Friday night. B. E Tarkington. school princi pal. said that he learned through THE NKWS TIMES that the school would probably receive be tween SI 75 and $200 for sponsor ing the Community Theatre play at the school two weeks ago. He announced that bids for a new eight room addition to the present school would be let on Oct. 20, and that the school will spon sor the Grass Roots opera at a matinee and evening perform ance in the school on Thursday, Dec. 2. Mrs. Lonnie Dill, program chair man for the evening, presented Coach Gordon, who spoke on the Beaufort Summer Recreation pro gram. which he directed last sum mer. lie told of the three phases of the program, swimming, base ball and dancing. Mr. (iordon explained how he and his assistant. Lewis Woodard, had taught swimming to 95 young sters. The group was divided into those who merely needed supervi sion. beginning swimmers who i were taught strokes, and non-swim mers who were taught how to han dle themselves in the water and had learned to swim slightly and stay afloat. He reported that chil dren in the swimming program came from Morehead City and com i munities outside Beaufort, as well as Beaufort. A special school-wide assembly was held on Friday morn ing. This was a call session for the purpose of reminding all stu dents that sportsmanship is the theme of Beaufort School. After the cheerleaders had taught the student body the new cheers and cheer songs, Mr. Tark ington spoke for a few minutes. He emphasized the fact that the score of a game is never important as long as the team plays a good clean game; that true victory lies in em ploying only honorable tactics. lie stated further that students, other than the team, were respon sible for the exercising of sports manshiplike conduct. His conclud ing thought was that as a commun ity sees and evaluates the students of a school, so* it evaluates that school. Beaufort FHA Chapter To Sponsor Dance Tonight The Future Homemakers of America at Beaufort High School will sponsor a daoce at the Beau fort Scout Building following the Shallottc game tonight. Mrs. Davis Beveridge, Home economics instructor, said the dance will be well-chaperoned and will end at 1 1:30 p.m. Arnecia Warren Circle Elects New Officers New officers were elected Mon day night when the Arnecia War ren Circle of the First Baptist Church met with Mrs. Frances Boone. - Mrs. William Warren was elect ed leader, Mis. Last Wednesday night at the Tri Ili-Y and Hi- Y joined forces to give a reception to new members of both groups. The reception was held in the Lottie Sander's building.
