Burke Farmers ' Like Hybrid Corn Several Burke County farmers have found that they can expect higher quality grain and stronger stalk strength from hybrid corn va rieties, according to F. J. Bell, ex tension seed and small grain spe cialist. At least three Burke farmers conducted demonstrations with hy brid and local corn varieties, - he said. Howard Beck of route 6 Morgan ton, compared three white hybrids with a local field corn. Results showed that NC 29, NC-31 and Ten nessee 29. all recommended white hybrids for this area, had higher yield, much better grain quality, and stronger stalks. Tennessee 29 showed lower ear placement than either NC-29, NC 31, or the oldtime white field corn. On the farm of J. A. McGem sey, a yellow hybrid corn demon stration was examined by the farm ers. Hybrids considered at this demonstration included West Vir ginia 1163, NC-24, Funk s G-91, Funk's G-94, U.S. 282. The West Virginia 1163 was the earliest while the U.S. 282 was the latest in ma turing. McGemsey vows that hy brid corn outyielded open pollin ated corn by 50 per cent. H. 0.
