Consider the Businessman's Problem
Before Asking Him to Make a Donation
NOT a day passes but the average businessman is asked to
give a prize or make a donation to some individual organiza
tion. The total cost of such contributions is surprisingly great.
For example, one local store in one year gave $1,500 either in
cash or merchandise. Without question, the "get it from the
businessman" plan of raising money has been abused.
Don't misunderstand . . . many of the projects are worthy
BUT the sheer number of requests has forced merchants and
businessmen to call a halt. If such action is not taken, it will
be economically impossible to continue liberal support to those
undertakings of an essential civic nature.
Remember, each respective firm appreciates and does sup
port civic enterprise. Furthermore, as firms they expend large
sums for their employees' social security. As a man, your mer
chant respects his responsibility to his own church, his own fra
ternal, patriotic and school organization.
If these responsibilities are to be met, it is necessary to
eliminate the giving of donations or prizes to Individual groups.
Therefore, not in a dictatorial manner, but in the spirit of
inviting your understanding and co-operation, we wish to
recommend the following general rule:
"All solicitations for special types of advertising, prizes,
and donations of every description must be submitted to, and
approved by the Merchants Committee of the Morehead City
Chamber of Commerce before any member may participate."
