the YANCEY JOURNAL AUGUST 17, 1972 PAGE 9 Jamboree Winners And Others Lend Talent And Music To Fair With participants corapeliig in eight categories, the 5th an nual Yancey Youth Jamboree got off to its traditional swing with Mr. Bill Banks emceeing the two-night event of Thurs day and Friday evening at the East Yancey High School Cym« ' As a special attraction for the Jamboree, exhibition num bers were performed by Mike Loftis and "The Drifters, ” Su sie Deyton, Doris Deaton, and Jerry Clevenger, Friday even ing was highlighted withavisit by Mrs, Leona Hayes, wife of the late Hubert Hayes who founded Asheville's Hubert Hayes Mountain Youth J a m- boree. This y'car's Jamboree hosted a panel of well-qualified iui^'s; Mr. and Mrs. James Mallory who are associated with May- land Technical Institutej Mr. Emmett Sams, math professor at Mars Hill College} Mrs. l\u\ Wilkins, a talented dance s^se- cialist of Avery County; Mrs. May Davis of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida who is highly talented in fields of voice, organ and piano, Tte eight category' winners of the Class I division were as foUotvss Bucking, Chris and Kelly Chrisawn; Clogging,the South Toe Elementary School; Folk Songs-Folk Ballads, Mary Beth Fender and Lisa Deyton; Instrumental, Amos Jones; Pa triotic Song, Eric Vess; Reli - gious Song, Tanya Allen; Smooch Square Dancing, South Toe Elementary; Western Sqiire Dancing, Micaville Elemcn - lary School, The eight category winners of the Class II division were: Bucking, the Bill Bailey Girls; Clogging, South Toe Elemen tary School; Folk Songs-Folk Ballads, Cane River HighSch. girl's group (Ramona Ray, Marie Maney, Debra Whitson, Dianne Banks and Pam Fox; Instrumental, Tony Hughes, Ricky' Harris and Steve Mc Clure; Patriotic Song, Gregory Presnell; Religious Song, Pat ty .Simmons; Smooth Square Dancing, South Toe Eiemen - tary; Western Square Dancing, Micaville Elementary School. Raylene Fox was presen - ted the Class I Grand Cham - pion trophy for her "Red Wing" song and Indian dance. The Country Store Cloggers were awarded the Class II Grand Champion trophy. Both of tte Grand Champion Jamboree re cipients were under the direc torship of Mrs. Nancy Fox of Burnsville, A special Challenge Trophy was presented to the person or group whose song scored the greatest number of points in authenticity. Recipients of this trophy were Ramona Ray, Marie Maney, Debra Whitson, Efianne Banks and Pam Fox for their song, "Blowing In The Wind," The Yancey' Youth Jam boree is a Yancey County' Chamber of Commerce spon sored event. i'JjT.'Y
