He said he would bu t I noticed they didn’t dance. Now Doris, Dean wouldn’t mind that! Last Thursday afternoon was our first football game away from Black Mountain. I hope everybody had a swell time getting to and from Oakley, for we did. Lor raine Stafford took seven of us (Doris Jones. Dana Gilliam, Dot Slagle. Shirley Melton, Marylin Cook, Carol Simmons and myself.) in the “open-air” jeep which her brother-in-law so kindly lent us. We all had a slight delay as the State troopers picked last Thurs day for checking driver’s license. One needs no binoculars to find Freida Ring these days. It is a simple method; first, find Max Morris and there the honey colored blond will be. Even if it’s early in the year, all the Junior and Senior girls at one time or the other are thinking of a special date for the banquet and for the prom. Seems as if one of the Senior boys is scouting around also! He has been seen frequently with four girls of Black Mountain Hi: Good Luck, Sir Cornell. Several rumors of romance are around about the Misses Elaine Allison and Dana Gilliam. I will admit those football boys attract a lot of attention. People around Hi school have led me to believe that Thelma Brook’s heart only throbs for a certain sailor. But what about parties with Harold Stepp and dancing with Edwin Smith? Last week in study hall Oliver Reese was debating his age. Better watch him, Peggy, he will be play ing with teething rings. I guess I didn’t live right, for my Algebra homework never was as interesting as Bub Gaskins is making his! Bub, do you find Sara Foster’s geometry just as inter esting. The senior class sponsored a ‘bang-up” square dance last Fri day nite. The gym was decorated with maroon and white crepe paper. The chaperons were two of our favorite teachers in high school, Mrs. Martha Perley and Miss Mary Wilson. The title of the best dancing couple of the evening went to 14- year-old Rose Candler and the call er, Bob Ritchie. Whirling with the music, Shirley Melton’s dance step made a hit too. Everybody was dressed in Sun day fashion, the boys wore both conservative and bright ties. (Joyce Silver’s date for the eve ning wore the cutest how tie. It looked nice to a couple of other girls besides Joyce.) Thelma Brooks sparkled many an eye with a full pink and black plaid taffeta skirt. Jody Atkins was cuter than a bug wearing a grey wool dress. I mean Judy wearing it, not the bug. Mrs. Perley and Miss Wilson were two of the most popular girls of the evening. Next time someone we all know will be wear ing low heel shoes. Ruth Bartlett and Red Taylor were having a wonderful time. They danced well together. Dana Gilliam seems camera shy, even Harold Browm who had all her dances could not persuade her to reconsider. Must be a reason? Something new-Rita Gasperson and Gene Ragen. Rita looked as if she enjoyed the evening as well as her escort. Cacky Dinwiddie and Burton Osteen were attending with their fast, shifting feet and smiles for everyone. What happened to your sister, Cacky? Nobody could have played checkers on that plaid skirt of Lorraine Stafford’s, for Malonie kept her in swift motion. Swish, that Shirley Melton’s taffeta skirt coming around some boy on the shu-fly swing. We were all glad to see Mr. and Mrs. Herbie Melton. Who Look Who’s Here! Their music plus a good caller made the evening a lot of fun.
