D 1, : Rough Tin BY TERRY POPE * Sharks were not the only fish stirrv ing in local waters last week. Inshore ls fishing steadily improved while off>' shore fishing has been "up and down le like a windowshade," said George Crisp of Ocean Isle Marina. ? Boats tliat did venture offshore last week were having to work tiard for their catches while fishing from the surf, inlets and waterway seemed to improve with the weather, area pier and marina operators reported. ,e Cooler weather over the weekend is 3r believed to have helped local fishing. a At the Sunset Beach Fishing Pier, le four king mackerel were reeled in last week while numerous flounder a and puppydrum were caught around n" the jetties. But kings offshore were giving fishermen fits, Crisp said. P .. * Here are uie reports from area r* piers and marinas: Sunset Beach Pier Four king mackerel highlighted an ,h improved weekend of fishing at the ts Sunset Beach Pier, reported Johnny m Hill. 0f "As a whole, fishing was good," rs Hill said. "We had a pretty good weekend on pompano, whiting and n. croakers." iy lee Bostic of Proctorville, Ohio, caught two king mackerel, a 20-pounder and a 15-pounder, over ,iH the weekend, Hill said. l?\ CraiR Inman ot WhitevlUe also intj reeled in a 23 pound king last week, st. while Vincent Davanzo caught a ina 16-pounder, Hill reported. pts i ich MULLIGAN HOUSSMOVRRS, Inc. liC?nte 055 ee" Tabor City, N.C. 653-2272 754-6065 Insured Bonded I 1 Best j Buysli e. Some flounder and spots were caught, Williamson said, "enough to hoid the crowds here." He said not much was caught from the pier Sunday, while Saturday was a good day of fishing. Ocean Isle Marina Those fishing offshore are "having to troll themselves to death" to get a nice catch of Spanish or king mackerel, reported George Crisp of Ocean Isle Marina. "Everybody is bringing back from 10 to 12 Spanish or kings a piece," Crisp said, down from earlier catches when the Spanish had grouped. Crisp said the ocean may still be stirred up from the storm, or Hurricane Bob. However, inshore fishing has improved, he said. Flounder, spots and plenty of croakers were caught last week, he said. A few dolphin were also caught offshore. Inlet View Marina Fishing news from Inlet View Marina of Ocean Isle has improved, said Joe Furr Jr., from last week's report. Fishermen are "tearing the drum and flounder up" around the jetties and waterway, Furr said. However, very few boats could make It offstiore last week. "It's picking up," Furr said. "It's looking better." Tripp's Fishing Center "They're not doing much. They picked up a few fiounder," said Joyce I .and of TriDD's Fishing Center at Shallotte Point. Spanish mackerel are not schooling offshore like they have in past, she said, which could be attributed to sharks coming into shore. Some fishermen caught some spots and croakers in gill nets over the weekend, Ms. Land said. Capt. Pete's Marina Party boats leaving Capt. Pete's Marina at Holden Beach were bringing back Spanish mackerel along with grouper and snapper, said Augusta Singletary. In the waterway and inlets, fishermen were catching spots and other small fish, she said. The cooler weather should make fishing better, she added. Holden Beach Pier Fishing at the Holden Beach Fishing Pier picked up after cooler weather arrived, said operator Gil DOSS. Some nice whiting and spots were caught from the pier over the weekend while a large shecpshead and drum were reeled in Monday morning, Bass said.
