SPORTING SCENE Scorps Selei New Fooibc BY JOHNNY CRAIG Former East Carolina University assistant Richard Harrell, Jr. was 1 selected early last week as the new football coach at North Brunswick just two days prior to the Scorpions first practice. Harrell was named to replace Mickey Daniels who was hired as the new head grid coach in early July on Ily to resign the post just two weeks later to accept a small college position in Georgia. Barren's coaching career, which includes stints at Roanoke, Tarboro and Ayden-Grifton high schools, was highlighted last season when he led 1-A Columbia to a 5-4-1 record?the school's first winning season in 14 years. As a result, Harrell, 28, was named Tobacco Belt Conference coach-ofthe-year. In another coaching change in the county, former South Brunswick junior varsity baseball coach Greg Clewis was promoted to the head varsity position replacing Joe Best. The volleyball clinic began yesterday (Wednesday) and will continue through Wednesday, August 14 from 9 a.m. till noon each day. West Brunswick volleyball coach Ink Bridges Sabiston is conducting the I clinic which is free to all interested The West Brunswick summer basketball camp for both boys and girls begins Monday, August 12, and also continues through Wednesday. The three-day camp, under the direction of West Brunswick coach Bonnie Champion, will run from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m. daily. Whiteville Continues Whiteville Post 137 and RockyMount tied a 2-2 in games in the American l-egion eastern championship, continue play in their best-ofseven series this week. Rocky Mount won the first game, 11-9 before Whiteville evened the series !-! with a 5-1 win in game two. Post 137 took the third game 14-7 but Rocky Mount evened the series with a 6-4 win in game four. Despite the fourth-game loss, Whiteville has filed a protest claiming a Rocky Mount pitcher had worked over the limited 12 innings in three days. Whiteville was to have hosted the fifth game of the series Tuesdaywhile the final two contests were scheduled at Rocky Mount.
