Volunteers from the Brunswick
County Council on the Status of
Women will be stationed outside
county grocery stores Saturday,
March 23, collecting food to be dis
tributed to needy families by the
Volunteer and Information Center.
The group collected food valued
at more than $6,000 through a simi
lar drive during the Christmas sea
son, with few shoppers choosing
not to contribute.
Council Chairperson Ida Mac
Mintz said the need for the local
food pantry continues.

stores from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., ask

"The food we asi for is inexpen
sive, staple goods ? rice, cereal, baby
food, dried beans, pototocs, canned
goods," said Mrs. Mint/.. "We're not
looking for extravagant items, just
the basics. Things that have shelf
life."
The council has decided to con
duct food drives for VIC three times
a year, focused around religious holi
days.

Baked Goods, Art Round Out Cook- Off

ning a giant holiday bake sale in
conjunction with the Robert Ruark
Foundation's second annual Chili
Cook-Off, set March 30 in Franklin
Square Park in downtown South
port.
Also, Franklin Square Gallery,
which adjoins the park, will partici
pate in the Easter weekend event
with the show, "Arts For Dessert."

Grace Ratigan has been elected
new treasurer of the Calabash Vol
unteer E.M.S., taking over for John
"Bud" Ruby who has resigned after
three years of service.
Mrs. Ratigan was elected at the
board of directors meeting last
Thursday. She will take over the
post effective April 1 .
Chief Lina Angstadt reported that
the rescue squad answered 32 calls
in February, worked 118 hours and
traveled 1,474 miles. There were 12
calls in Calabash, 11 in Sunset
Beach, five other calls and four mu
tual aid calls.
The board of directors voted to
purchase two turn-out coats that
would be use 1 If rescue workers en
countered hazardous material, said
Maryn Hall, secretary.

Seminar Explores
Options For Seniors
Opportunities for People 55 + is
the topic of an upcoming seminar
offered through the Brunswick
Community College Small Business
Center.
The seminar will be held Tues
day, March 19, from 1 p.m. to 4
p.m. on BCC's main campus north
of Supply.
Home-based businesses, Medi
care processing and wills and trusts
will be discussed, along with health
care and senior advantage services.
The seminar is open to the public
at no charge, since funding for the
program is provided by a state grant.

Marriage Vows In Raleigh

were married Saturday, March 9, at
noon in the Meredith Chapel in Ra
leigh.
The bride is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Paul Flucgel of
Shallotte. The groom is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Vardell
Hughes of Ash.
The Rev. Charles Smith officiat
ed the double ring ceremony. Music
was provided by Betty Holland of
Raleigh, keyboard, and Vernon Cox
of Greenville, soloist.
Given in marriage by her father,
the bride wore a formal white satin
gown. The gown featured a sabrina
neckline decorated with scalloped
Schiffli lace and lcg-o-multon
sleeves enhanced with English net
and Schiffli lace embroidered with
pearls and sequins. The basque
bodice was accented with embroi
dered Schiffli lace beaded with
pearls and sequins. The heart-shaped
keyhole back featured draped
strands of pearls. Her full skirt
flowed into a semi-cathedral length
train with lace cut-outs and edging.
A matching halo of silk flowers,
beaded lace and pearl "peps" held
the double pouf and two-tiered fin
gertip veil of illusion.
She carried a cascading bouquet
of mixed flowers.
Mary Jon May of Greenville
served as the bride's maid of honor.
Bridesmaids were Lori McLaugh
lin, Lisa Ivey and Michelle Mc
Lean, all of Greenville.
The attendants wore identical
gowns of blue spruce embossed
faille taffeta. The dresses featured a
portrait neckline and three-quarter
length puffed sleeves. The deep
scoop back featured double assy
metrical straps with bows at one
side. A front side bow accented the
basque bodice, which flowed into a
full circular tea-length skirt. They
carried bouquets of mixed flowers.
The groom's father was his best
man. Ushers were Stan Hughes of
Raleigh, Edward Smith of Charlotte
and Paul Hughes of South Carolina,
all cousins of the groom.
Following the ceremony a buffet
luncheon reception was held at the
North Carolina State University
Faculty Club in Raleigh.
The newlyweds will make their
home in Greensboro, where the
groom is employed by Cardinal
Chemicals as a salesman and ware
house manager.
The groom is a graduate of N.C.
State University with a bachelor's
degree in agronomy.
The bride will graduate in May
from East Carolina University,
where she completing requirements
for a master's degree in speech and
language pathology.

Ventriloquist To Be Featured
Lori Harris, a Christian ventrilo
quist from Lcland, will be featured
at the March 20 meeting Calabash
Elks Auxiliary No. 2679.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.
at the Elks Lodge, Traders Village,
with Elks joining members for the
program.
Also at the March 20 meeting,
the auxiliary will elect officers for
the coming year.
Coed exercise classes sponsored
by the auxiliary continue at the
lodge each Tuesday, Thursday and
Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
They are open to the public.
Egg Hunt Planned
An Easter egg hunt Saturday,
March 30, at 10:30 a.m. at the Cala
bash VFW Post No. 7288 for chil
dren ages 1 to 10 from the Calabash
community.
The hunt is sponsored by the post
and its ladies auxiliary.
Also, the auxiliary meets next
Monday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. at

Friday, March 22, starting at 10 a.m.
at the Calabash branch of United
Carolina Bank.
Proceeds from the bake sale will
benefit the Calabash Volunteer Fire

Naturalist To Speak
Julie Finlayson, naturalist at Hun
tington Beach State Park south of
Myrtle Beach, S.C., will be the guest
speaker at the March 20 meeting of
the Brunswick County Bird Club.

A Charleston tea party, featuring
the only tea grown in America,
American Classic, will be the theme
of the March 21 buffet luncheon

Work On Mural Begins Friday
A sccond upcoming project by
Brunswick Community College
Visiting Artist Emily Weinstein will
involve artists and those interested
in becoming artiste ? particularly
those who like painting "big".
Ms. Weinstein begins her first
community mural project Friday,
March 15. The panel will be execut
ed during a series of workdays
scheduled at the college.
Artists arc to meet at 2 p.m. Fri
day in the art room of the Vocation
al Arts Building on BCC's main
campus north of Supply. Additional
workdays arc planned March 19,
20, 21 and 26, also at 2 p.m., in the
art room.
