West Girls To BY JOHNNY CRAIG The West Brunswick Lady Tro jans were eliminated from the East ern 2-A Sectional III basketball tournament with last Wednesday's 53-29 semifinal loss to Southwest Randolph. The West girls opened state play off action with a 46-33 win over the North Carolina School of Math and Science in Durham last Monday. The semifinal loss ended the sea son for West (17-8) after finishing the regular season with a share of second place in the Waccamaw Conference. Becky Buffkin scored 16 points and Christy King 11 to lead the Lady Trojans in the win over Math and Science, the Capital Area Conference runnerup. Tamcla Morton led the Lady Unicorns with 15 points and Cecily Fox added eight. "It was the best game we have played of late," said West Bruns wick coach Brenda Council. 'We went to the boards well and worked a good defensive variation between a 3-2 zone and a 1-3-1 press." "I guess we realized that if we did not play well in the playoffs that we would go home. The girls want to keep on playing so they were mo p N.C. Math tivaled to perform well." West Brunswick used its aggres sive defense to take control of the game early as the Lady Trojans cruiscd to a 27-13 halftimc lead. West continued to overpower the Lady Unicorns in the second half outscoring the hosts 15-10 in the third quarter and 14-10 in the final period. Score By Quarters West Brunswick 14 13 15 14 ? 46 N.C. Southwest Randolph West Brunswick hit the road for its second four-hour road trip in three days and suffered its 53-29 lost to Central Tar Heel Conference champion Southwest Randolph (Asheboro). "We did not play well at all. We just seemed like we were in a daze and stood around. We made too many mental errors and committed a lot of unforced turnover. Had we played like wc did Monday night 1 feel wc would have advanced to the and Science; Knocked From Playoffs By SW Randolph sectional finals," said Council. Buffkin led the way for West Brunswick with 14 points as only three other Lady Trojans scored. Holly Hill scored 16 points to lead Southwest Randolph followed by Tippen Wilson with 10. The Lady Vikings led 14-11 in the opening penod and extended their margin to 23-17 at the half. Southwest Randolph continued to pull away in the third quarter 33-22 before the Lady Trojans were trounccd in the Final period 20-7. SPORTING SCENF Spring Sports Provide Preps With Busy Season BY JOHNNY CRAIG High school athletics across the state began their busiest season of the school year earlier this week with the kickoff of the spring sports campaign. Brunswick County high schools field no less than seven teams in the spring including those in varsity and junior varsity baseball, boys' tennis, golf, boys' and girls' track and field and girls' softball. Combine the regional high school basketball tournament that con cludes Saturday and the state championship the following weekend (Mar. 23) in Chapel Hill, March is without question the busiest month on the prep calendar. Most spring sports coaches at West Brunswick seemed optimistic prior to the opening of the season this week. Trojan baseball coach Mike Aldcrson believes the combination of a vastly-improved pitching staff and the return of the bulk of his lineup from a year ago will have the West Brunswick diamond team battling for a state playoff spot this spring. Taking over junior varsity baseball chores this year will be newcomer Doug Keelan, a former catcher in the Atlanta Braves farm system. Keclan served as JV basketball coach this winter and will lead the Trojan feeder team in a 16-game schedule that began Wednesday. Tennis coach Marti Gillis looks to have her best boys' spring team in three years. Early home conference wins over Fairmont and Whiteville next week could possibly set the tone for the season and help the Trojans bring home the Waccamaw Conference net championship. Girls' softball coach Tracy James will be blessed with youth on this year's squad but will lack experience in the early going. The Lady Trojans fell to the bottom of the WC last spring after winning the league title in 1989. The Lady Trojan track team saw a record number of girls qualify for the sectional meet last spring and coach Kathy Bryant is hoping for another strong squad. Baseball headlines the spring sports calendar at North Brunswick where 1990 county diamond coach of the year Keith Moore returns enough veteran players to make a run on the Waccamaw Conference championship. The Scorpions advanced to the sccond round of the state playoffs last spring and should have the pitching staff to spark the team even farther this time around. Cougars Prepare For Regionals The South Brunswick Cougars boys' basketball team practiced at UNC-Wilmington this week in preparation for the Eastern 2-A Regional tournament at Greenville. Since the regional tourney will be played on the East Carolina University campus and the state finals in the Dean Smith Center at the University of North Carolina, Cougar coach Gene Doane wanted his team to get the feel for the college hardcourt. "The college court is 10 feet longer than the high school court plus the area behind the basket to the wall is greater," said Doane this week. "If you're not used to the situation, you'll shoot the ball over the basket all night." Doane considers this year's Cougar cage team to be his best since com ing to South Brunswick. "We may have faced our toughest test to date against Graham in the sectional finals last weekend. The kids are excited and ready to play. We just have to make sure they stay focused on what we've got to do and take it one game at a time." Doane sees similarities to his 1982 team that won the Maryland high school championship and the squad he considers to be his best ever in 30 years of prep coaching. 'This team is a lot like the 1982 team in that it's not a great selection of all-stars but rather every player is contributing their two-cents worth." A win in Wednesday's regional semifinal game would send the Cougars to the finals Saturday at 2 p.m. Big Oak Mobile Home Supplies "See lis for all your mobile home needs."
