Free Throws Spark Late Rally As Cougs Upend Graham For Sectional Title BY JOHNNY CRAIG South Brunswick gained a little revenge last Saturday in edging Graham 67-66 in overtime for the Eastern 2-A Sectional 111 boys' bas ketball championship at Union Pines (Carthage). It was the same Graham team that ousted South Brunswick in last year's sectional finals. Only this time around, the Cougars staged perhaps their most dramatic come back ever in advancing to this week's Eastern 2-A Rcgionals in Greenville. South Brunswick advanced to the sectional finals after topping visit ing Union Pines 76-63 last Tuesday in a semifinal contest. The Cougars were to have opened regional play Wednesday against Northside (Beaufort) who entered the contest with a 20-6 record. A South Brunswick win would send the Cougars against the winner of the Ayden-Grifton (23-4) vs. Jordan-Matthews (23-5) contest for the regional championship Saturday. The regional champion will advance to the state title contest in Chapel Hill on Saturday, March 23. ***** South Brunswick trailed 59-52 with 47 seconds left in regulation but the Cougars rallied to knott the score 59-59 and then outscorcd Graham 9-8 in overtime for the win. "Clutch free throw shooting was the difference," said South Bruns wick coach Gene Doanc. "Free throw shooting and a little luck also helped." The Cougars connected on 13 of 14 free throw opportunities in the final quarter and the overtime peri od. "We played well and smart and made our free throws when we had to," added Doanc. We showed a lot of character to comc back from so far with so little time remaining." "We lost our poise and didn't execute at times but overall did what we had to do to get the ball inside to our big men." South Brunswick sank all three chances at the stripe in overtime compared to Graham's 3-for-5 accu racy. Six-foot-11 center Jon Hunter's slam dunk gave Graham its 59-52 lead in the closing seconds and the partisan Red Devil crowd began to celebrate. The celebrations were a little pre mature as the Cougars rallied to lie the game on Preston McGriff's three-point goal and an alley-oop slam by Greg Williams. Josh White then sank two free throws with eight seconds left to tie the score after Carl Parker rebounded a missed Graham shot moments earli er. For McGriff, it was only his sec ond three-pointer of the season but it couldn't have comc at a better time. "During a timeout wo discussed that we had to get a three-pointer," said Doanc. "Preston was open and just knocked it down. He can score from that range but we never let him shoot that far from the basket" South Brunswick grabbed the quick lead in overtime, 66-61 before Graham, with the help of a three-point goal, rallied to retake a 67-66 edge with 15 scconds remain ing. Greg Williams was fouled and sank both ends of a onc-and-one free throw opportunity for the win with eight seconds left after White penetrated the Graham defense and passed off under the basket. South Brunswick never led in the game until midway in the fourth quarter when the Cougars went ahead briefly 52-5 1 . Graham, the defending sectional champions, started the game with one of the largest prep frontcourts in the state plus the experience of nine seniors. Shawn Holt, a 6-8, 245-pound forward, led the Red Devils, the Central Tar Heel Conference cham pions, with 19 points. Rod Carter, another 6-6 forward added 16 while Hunter added 10. Holt recently signed a grant to play at NCAA Division I Fordham University (New York City). Graham point guard Lcron Moore followed with 13 points. McGriff scored 28 points before fouling out in overtime to lead South Brunswick (25-3). Williams added 19 and White 10 for the Cougars. Score By Quarters Graham 20 9 13 17?8 ? 67 S. Division of Marine Fisheries recently completed an expansion of the artificial reef locat ed 9.3 miles south of the inlet. More than 100 boat dcck molds have been dropped on the reef over the last three months, according to Steve Murphcy, coordinator of the division's artificial reef program. The fiberglass and steel molds were each eight feet wide and between 18 and 23 feet long. They were donated by a boat-building company in Fair Bluff molds. The State Ports Authority of Wilmington provided storage space. Murphey said the molds were added to a reef site where 10 train cars wcic sunk in 1986 in 53 feel of water. The molds added 50,000 square feel of surface to the reef. 'The reason we chose this site is because it's accessible from the Southport and Lockwood Folly area," Murphcy said. "I think it's going 10 really cnhance the fishing out there, especially for sea bass and that sort of thing." Loran numbers for the reef oft Lockwood Folly Inlet are 45352.4 .3 and 59281.4. Murphey said the Division of Marine Fisheries is presently work ing with the Long Bay Artificial Reef Association on an addition to a reef off Shallottc Inlet. A 174-foot steel hull freighter loaded with concrete pipe should be sunk this spring. Murphey said the groups are wailing for a final U.S. Coast Guard inspection and good weather. The Division of Marine Fisheries maintains 47 artificial reefs along the coast. For a complete list, call 1 800-682-2632 in stale or (919)726 7021 out of state.
