Deaths And Funerals JOSEPH GWYN BIVINS Joseph Gwyn Bivins, 70, of Sun set Beach and formerly of Elkin, died May 10 at Forsyth Hospital, Winston-Salem, following a brief illness. The funeral was held May 13 at Elkin Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Brearly officiating. Burial was in Hollywood Cemetery, Elkin. Survivors includc his wife, Max inc Bivins of Sunset Beach; three daughters, Peggy Matthews of Statesville, Elizabeth Bacon of Elkin and Kathy White of King; two step daughters, Linda Carter of Hampton ville and Sandra Eldridge of Elkin; and one stepson, Steve Randolph. The family requests memorials be made to Elkin Presbyterian Church, Elkin, N.C. 28621. MADOLYN IRENE LENT Madolyn Irene Lent, 79, of Brad enton, Fla., died May 21 in the L.W. Blake Hospital, Bradenton. The funeral Mass was May 25 in St. Brendan's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Francis Maloncy officiat ing. Burial was in Brunswick Mem orial Gardens. Survivors includc her husband, Edward J. Lent of the home; two daughters, Sally Mulholland of Shallotte and Mary Dcnely of Cen tral Square, N.Y.; nine grandchil dren; and one great-grandchild. DANIEL BURRIS WARD Daniel Burris "Shorty" Ward, 73, of Route 2, Leland, died May 21. The funeral was May 23 at Camp Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Garland Long. Burial was in the church cemetery. He was born in Columbus Coun ty, the son of the late John Henry and Idell Long Ward. He was re tired from Timme Corp. Survivors includc his wife, Mary Ganey ward; three daughters, Eula Dell White, ShcrTel Stewart and Judy Suggs, all of Wilmington; two stepson; four stepdaughters; three brothers, Jesse Ward of Winnabow and Howard Ward and Elbert Ward, both of Route 4, Whiteville; eight sisters, Mattie Ethcridgc, Rosie Long, Marcelle Etheridge, Lucille Godwin, Maxinc Brock and Senna Mac Etheridge, all of Route 4, Whiteville; Vada Russ of Long wood and Eileen Fipps of Fayette villc; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. CARLINE FAIRCLOTH ,i WATERS Carline Faircloth Waters, 79, of Isle of Palms, S.C., died May 19 al her home. The funeral was May 21 at Inman Chapel in Tabor Cily by the Rev. Kirk Lawton, with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor Cily. Mrs. Waters was a native of Columbus County, a daughter of the late Joseph Edgar and Nancy Olive Lee Faircloth. A graduate of James Walker Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Wilmigton, she was a registered nurse in South Carolina for many years. She was the widow of Edward Hill Waters. Survivors include a daughter, Frances Piatt of Isle of Palms; four sisters, Erlene F. Horton of Surfside Beach, S.C., Valerie Jollie of Mur rclls Inlet, S.C., Lorcna Grant of Willow Grove, Pa., and Allcne Todd of Winnabow; three grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. RUTH MARLOWE Ruth Marlowe of Ash died died May 26 at Columbus County Hos pital in Whiteville. The funeral was to be 2 p.m. Thursday at Little Prong Baptist Church in the Lttle Prong communi ty, Ash, with the pastor, the Rev. Raymond Smith officiating. Burial was to be in Little Prong Cemetery. A wake was to be held Wednes day from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the People's Funeral Home Chapel in Whiteville. Survivors include seven daugh ters, Rudcll Gausc, Essie Bowcns, Dclphia Bryant, Clco Johnson, Ercell Godwin, Betty Godwin and Delia Randolph; a son, Clinton Marshburn; and four sisters, Irene Johnson, Thalia Stanley, Thclma James and Estella Collins. JOHN WESLEY GILES John Wesley Giles, 79, of Au tumn Care Nursing Center, Shallot te, died May 24 in The Brunswick Hospital. The funeral was May 26 at Occan View Baptist Church by the Rev. Macon Wood. Burial was May 27 in Pincy Wood Baptist Church Ceme tery, Cameron. Bom in Blytheville, Ark., on July 25, 1911, he was a son of the late Edward and Hedi Dugan Giles. Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth McVay Giles of Sunset Beach; two sons, John L. Giles of Sunset Beach and Aaron Giles of Dearborn, Mich.; four daughters, Mildred Cox of Sunset Beach, Ruby Storage of Detroit, Mich., Mary Adams of Toledo, Ohio, and Carol Domek of Farmington Hills, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren. FRANCIS M. HOLLIS Francis M. "Patch" Hollis, 64, of Wilmington, died May 24 in the Vet erans Administration Regional Hos pital, Fayetteville. The funeral was May 27 at Olivet Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jona than D. Blackburn officiating. Buri al was in Bellcvue Cemetery. Hollis was bom in Leland on April 15, 1927. He was the son of Cora Cook Hollis of Southport and the late Archie Earl Hollis Sr. He was a member of Olivet Bap tist Church, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II and had been employed with Gregory Poole Equipment Co. for 21 years. Hollis was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Daniels Hollis, who died Sept. 30, 1988. Survivors in addition to his moth er include two sons, James K. Jack son and Earl Hollis, both of Lake Waccamaw; two daughters, Mrs. Mike (Terric) Robbins of Wilming ton and Mrs. Randall (Nancy) File of the home; a brother, Archie E. Hollis Jr. of Leland; two sisters, Hallie Wilkins and Tillie Clark, both of Leland; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. JEREMIAH DENKINS Jeremiah Denkins of Leland died May 25 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. The funeral was to be at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Bethel Mission ary Baptist Church, Winnabow, with burial in Calvary Memorial Cemetery. SARAH MOSLEY The funeral for Sarah Mosley of Route 3, Leland, was held May 25 at Davis Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Flemington Ceme tery. Ms. Mosley died May 22 at her residence. DVVIGHT WAYNE REEVES Funeral arrangements for Dwight Wayne Reeves of Southport were to be announced by Andrews Mortu ary Street Chapel, Wilmington. He died Monday, May 27. RELIGIOUS BRIEFS Vacation Bible Schools Slated With school letting out this week, area churches are making plans to offer Vacation Bible School. Some will be offered during day time hours and others during the evening for greater accessibility. Grace Bible school will be held June 3-7 at Grace Baptist Church in Shallotte, with commencement planned June 8, said spokesman Helen Inman. The church is located on Mulber ry Street. Transportation can be arranged by calling 287-6592. New Britton Bible school for children and ad ults will be held June 10-14 at New Britton Baptist Church of Ash. Hours will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each day, said Debra Young, di rector. The church is located on the King town Road. Jennies Branch Jennies Branch Baptist Church holds a vacation Bible school June 17-21 from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. each day. The school is for children ages 3 through high school, said spokes person Erica Black. The church is lo cated on N.C. 179 at Brick Landing. Deeds to the 5-acre tract on Georgetown Road have been held by Coastal Carolina Presbytery dur ing the organizational period for the church and acquisition of the prper ty, said the Rev. Francis Womack, minister. Land for the church building was purchased with gifts from the con gregation and supporters and through grants from the New Church Development Committee of Coastal Carolina Presbytery. DAVIS Ocean Isle STAff rMOIO BY DOUG turn* OCEAN ISLE BEACH CHAPEL will be dedicated Sunday at 11 a.m. Ocean Isle Chapel To Be Dedicated BY DOUG RUTTER A dedication ccrcmony will be held Sunday for the Ocean Isle Beach Chapel, a non-denomination al church that has been in the works since 1983. The Rev. George Speake, minis ter at Camp United Methodist Church in Shallotle, will help dedi cate the new church and preach Sunday at 11 a.m. The first service in the chapel was held last Sunday. Odcll and Virginia Williamson of Ocean Isle Beach helped establish and were major contributors for the church, which is located on West Third Street across from the town hall and next to the fire station. "It's here for the people," Mrs. Williamson said. "It's here for the residents and the people who are away from their home church when they visit the beach." Mrs. Williamson said she has ar ranged to have a different preacher every Sunday through Labor Day weekend. "No problem with preach ers," she said. "I'm overflowing with them." Ministers from various denomi nations including Baptist, Metho dist, Presbyterian and Assemblies of God will conduct weekly services. A Quaker group is scheduled to sing one Sunday this summer. In return, the Williamsons will provide accommodations for a week at the beach. "It will give them a va cation and help us out," Mrs. Williamson said. All of the ministers were recom mended by friends. "I feel like we've got a wonderful slate of preachers," she said. "It's a good mixture." Each preacher will conduct a Sunday service on the strand west of the Ocean Isle Beach Fishing Pier at 8:30 a.m. Services in the church will start at 11 a.m. The church seats about 300 peo ple. Large glass windows on the north side of the building offer a good view of the Adantic Intra coastal Waterway and Odell Wil liamson Bridge. Mrs. Williamson said she started planning for the church in 1983. Ocean Isle Bcach property owners donated S9.000 for the church at that time and the money was held in a building fund. Odcll Williamson donated S250.000, which was used to build the church. Mrs. Williamson said the S9.000 contributed by landown ers was used to purchase pews, chairs, a communion tabic and other furnishings. The church will not be taking memberships. 'They're welcome to come any time they want to." Mrs. Williamson said. "The people who are visiting here won't have to go out and hunt a church." Mrs. Williamson said she's not sure if services will continue after Labor Day weekend. "We'll have to make that decision closer to the date. We may have something out here in the winter."
