PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Canady Earns Masters Allison "Buddy" Canady, former ly of Calabash, rcccntly received the Masters of Arts in Education Degree in physi cal education with an option in athletic ad ministration from East Caro lina University. Canady, who lb finished with a grade point av- CANADY erage of 3.2, was a graduate assis tant instructor in the physical educa tion department while completing his degree requirements. His responsibilities included teaching undergraduate classes in tennis, golf, physical conditioning, basketball and elementary and inter mediate swimming. Canady is presently teaching physical education at an adolescent substance abuse center and plans to pursue a carccr in teaching and coaching in the Raleigh or Wilm ington area. Canady and his wife, Carla, reside in Greenville. He is the oldest son of Joseph Lcc and Patricia Ann Canady of Calabash. Re-Elected To Board Sheila K. McLamb has been re elected to the South Brunswick Is lands Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for a three-year term. McLamb be gan her first term in 1989 and served through January 1993. She also serves on the Brunswick MCLAMB Community College Foundation Board of Directors, of which she is a past president. McLamb is a practicing attorney and partner with the firm of Anderson and McLamb. She is a member of die Brunswick County Bar, N.C. State Bar, N.C. Bar Asso ciation, N.C. Academy of Trial Lawyers, N.C. Association of Wo men Attorneys and American Bar Association. Union Elementary School Lists Second Nine-Week Honors Union Elementary School has an nounced the fourth grade honor for the second nine-week grading peri od of the term. IRA'S FRATERNAL PROGRAMS SCHOOL RAISES $3.386 Waccamaw Students Jump For Heart Waccamaw Elementary School students jumped up and down for six hours last Wednesday to help fight heart disease. The kids raised S3,386.61 for the American Heart Association during the school's inaugural Jump Rope For Heart event. More than 470 children ages 5 to 14 participated. Students raised money by getting donations from family members, friends and neigh bors. Waccamaw's top money-raisers were sccond-grader Jason Richard son and his sister, kindergarten stu dent Moniquc Richardson. They cach raised S201 and will rcceivc savings bonds. Other students will be rewarded with prizes such as jump ropes for raising money. Jump Rope For Heal is de signed to tcach students about the benefits of exercise and a healthy lifestyle while promoting teamwork and building school spirit. It emphasizes the importance of proper nutrition, exercise and con trolling high blood pressure while discouraging children from smok ing, according to event coordinators Mclanie Champion and Ray Wilson. Champion said the event was a "huge success." As of Friday, Wac canuiw Elementary was leading the region in the amount of money raised through the program. "Everyone had a great lime, but even more important, the students learned about the importance of physical fitness and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease," Champion said. "Those lessons will p.'.y dividends throughout their life times."
