In Seashell Tournament Finals BY DOUG RUTTER North Brunswick contained New Hanover for four innings before the Wildcats pulled away for a 10-2 w in last Wednesday in the championship game of the Seashell Invitational high school baseball tournament in Wilmington. Parker Southerland had two hits and three RBI. Shawn Gallagher had three hits and two RBI and Chris LaMarsh added three hits for the Wildcats, who ran their season record to 9-0. North Brunswick, the smallest school in the eight-team tournament field, played valiantly but could not match New Hanover's firepower. I"he Wildcats, last year's state 4A champions, extended their winning streak to 35 games. "New Hanover's got a good ball club. Iliey had clutch hits when they needed them," North Brunswick Coach Keith Moore said. Hanover 0 0 2 0 4 4 X?10131 Scorpions Edge Buccaneers 5-2 Paul Mintz struck out 11 batters and limited Laney to six hits to lead North Brunswick to a 5-2 win in the second round of the Scashell Invi tational high school baseball tourna ment last Tuesday in Wilmington. The senior left-hander went the distance on the mound for the Scor pions. North broke a l-l tie in the third inning with a two-run single by catcher Robert Hewett. Laney (6-4) cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth, but the Scorpions (5-4) added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and held on for the win. North Brunswick Tops East Bladen North Brunswick's softball team won its Three Rivers Conference opener Monday, beating East Bladen 14-4 in Leland. Winning pitcher Jenny Crowder, Candace Ganey and Cindy Holt had two hits apiece for the Lady Scorpions, who improved to 7-3 overall. North Brunswick was scheduled to continue conference play Tuesday at Tar Heel. The Lady Scorpions host St. Pauls on Thursday. at 2-2 with one run in the top of the fifth before the bottom fell out. New Hanover banged out seven hits and scored eight runs over the next two innings. "We knew they were going to come out ready. That's revenge from last summer," said Moore, referring to Post 68's playoff defeat of Post 10 for the 1993 American Legion Area II Eastern League title. I"he Scorpions opened the scoring in the third inning when Jeremy SuIIinan drew a leadoff walk and ad vanced to third on a wild pitch and sacrifice bunt by Jeremy Child. Sullivan scored when pitcher Case\ McBride delivered a line sin gle to left field for a 1 -0 lead. New Hanover answered with two runs in the bottom of the third. L.aMarsh singled and scored on a throwing error, and Eric Faulk added an RBI single for the Wildcats. North Brunswick tied the score at 2-2 in the fifth. Child crushed a leadoff double to left, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch by New Hanover reliever Hamer Morris. Morris, who replaced Jeremy Padgett following Child's double, shut down North Brunswick the rest of the way. He pitched three score less innings, struck out six and did not allow a hit. The Wildcats broke the 2-2 tie in the fifth, when they sent eight bat ters to the plate and scored four runs. Gallagher ripped an RBI single and Southerland had a two-run sin gle to highlight the inning. In the sixth, Gallagher had an RBI triple and Southerland an RBI single as New Hanover scored four more runs to put the Scorpions away. McBride, who had pitched North Brunswick to a first-round tourna ment win just two days earlier, gave up 10 hits and four earned runs in 5% innings. His record fell to 3-2. "He was basically pitching on adrenaline tonight," Moore said after McBride struck out seven batters. "He couldn't have pitched much bet ter. He kept us in the ball game and gave us an opportunity to win it." "He didn't have the pop that he usually has." Moore added. "He didn't want to come out at the end, but this game wasn't worth risking an injury to his arm. Casey has a bright future in baseball." North Brunswick had advanced to the tournament finals with a 5-2 win over Wilmington Laney in the sec ond round. The Scorpions opened the tournament with a 10-2 victory over Fayetteville E.E. Smith. New Hanover reached the cham pionship game with a first-round. 10-1 win over South Brunswick and a 2-1 victory over city rival Hoggard in the tournament's second round.
