Commission Trying New Registration System Instantaneous renewal of boat re gistrations may be possible 24 hours a day, seven days a week if an ex periment by the N.C. Wildlife Re sources Commission proves suc cessful. The commission has installed computer equipment to handle the new procedure a spokesman says will make the renewal process sim pler and faster. Four thousand of the 15,000 North Carolina boat owners whose registrations expire in May may re new by using their telephone and a Mastercard or VISA card. The program is limited to boaters who wish to register their boats for three years. The new system is cheaper than purchasing one-year registrations. A three-year registration costs $20, and three one-year renewals cost $24. Registration calls usually take three to four minutes, according to a Wildlife Resources Commission news release. When the credit card company accepts the transaction and the call is completed, the registration is valid and in the commission's computer system. The valid decal and registration card will be mailed to the boat owner on the next work ing day. Commission officials say they will evaluate the results of the May registration experiment. If it is con sidered successful, the program could be fully implemented by June or July.
