WILL THE STREAK BE SNAPPFD8 North Brunswick Scorpions Open At Home Friday Against Topsail Pirates BY DOUG R UTTER August 30, 1991. Thai was the last Friday night that a North Brunswick High School var sity football team walked off the field w ith a victory. The Scorpions have endured 19 consccutive losses since then, but there could be reason for hope as North Brunswick's coaches and players prepare for the 1994 season opener Friday at 7:30 p.m. Norm's last victory was a 26-0 whipping of the Topsail Pirates in the l'*M season opener. Guess who's coming to Leland Friday night Topsail will provide the opposi tion as North Brunswick, under first year head coach Garry Bishop, looks to snap the second-longest los ing streak in North Carolina. Only Asheville Exwin. with 21 straight losses, has suffered longer than North Brunswick. Trinity also has dropped 19 in a row. "We've definitely mentioned that to the kids. Nobody wants to be part of a streak like that," Bishop said. "We can win some ball games. We're uonna try to pull together and play good, hard football." After four years as an assistant football coach at North, Bishop took over as head coach two weeks ago following the resignation of Gary Baldwin "I'm taking it as a challenge and I'll do the best I can," said Bishop, a former high school quarterback at perennial power Richmond County. "Right now the strength is going to be on offense. The offense is a lit tle bit ahead of the defense." Bishop said. "I think we're going to be able to move the football." The Scorpions plan to use a bal anced passing and rushing attack featuring Ryan Brew at quarterback, Mike Edge at halfback and Lamont Southerland at fullback. Starting wing back Andrea Moscly and split end Shannon Hankins also will handle the corner back duties on defense. Other two-way starters for the Scorpions include Tom Chadwick (FB/LB), Mark Willis (OT/MLB), Thomas Tucker (OG/DT) and Bub ba Lowery (TE/LB). Willis and Lowery. "Other than that I got new people everywhere on defense," Bishop said. The Scorpions will need to move the football and score some points this season in order to be successful. Bishop said. North's offense strug gled last season and that put too much pressure on the defense. "If we can score some points this year that will be a big key." Bishop said. "We need to score to keep our defense from spending the whole game on the field." With only 25 players on the varsi ty roster. Bishop's biggest concern heading into the season is depth. North Brunswick cannot afford to lose any players to injury. "We may need a miracle worker. We need to stay healthy and hope nothing bad happens." Bishop said. During the current 19-game los ing streak. North Brunswick has been outscored 719-107 and shut out eight times. The Scorpions came close to snapping the streak at the end of last season, losing their final two games 20-16 ir Red Springs and 36-20 to South Robeson. North Brunswick, which has had just one winning season in school history and is 1-29 since 1990, was 0-10 last year after a 12-0 season opening loss at Topsail.
