Right Kind Of Mistakes W hen the war is over and the aver age American settles down to a peacetime struggle with the high cost of living there will be stories of wasteful expenditures and unneces sary use of public funds during the present war. This is inevitable, but it is much better to expect such revelations than to look forward to narratives concerning "not enough" of the wea pons of stuff of war. If mistakes of production must oc cur, let them involve over-production and over-preparation. They save lives. HEALTH DiEPARTMENT ACCOMPLISHES MUCH WORK DURING YEAR (Coiaiuued fronr Page On) cal examinations. ' Pre-school examinations totaled 157 before the close of school iattt year, and just before the opening of the present school year. These were conducted at every school in the county. Talks have been made to school groups and Parent-Teacher Associations on all phases of public health protection by different mem bers of the department, and sound motion pictures relating to these subjects have been shown. Sanitary supervision of all food, handling establishments, meat mar kets, dairies and trailer camps has been maintained. A much-needed restaurant has been opened in Hert ford with adequate sanitary facilities. This work has entailed upward of 300 visits for instruction and inspec tions. Plans have -been provided for the construction of one sanitary slaugnlernouse and work is-progress-ing toward the building of .that house; other slaughterers are prepar ing to provide themselves with sani tary slaughtering facilities. Two hundred, eighty-nine patients have been registered with the ue partment lor treatment of venereal disease; 867 blood tests for syphilis have been made. The weekly vener eal disease clinic held at the depart ment each Tuesday afternoon and evening from 2 until 7 o'clock, has expanded progressively. Treatments for syphilis total 3,228, and 248 for gonorrhea. i The work of the department in' Tuberculosis Control has been donel oapaMy. 1 S please make immediate payment Kiss Audrey Umphlett, the PubUei yThia 4th day of December, 1943. Railroads Look To The Future The railroads of the nation are expected to roll up a total of eighty billion miles of passenger traffic this year which is equivalent to six hundred miles on non-commuting ' trains for each man, woman and child in the country. 1 This record-breaking traffic is nearly double the peak performance of the first World War. Colonial Ave. at 20th St. NORFOLK, VA: Hey, you fiere come away from that fob and listen a little, I7e want to say some nice things about you. Maybe your ears will burn, but you've got n coming. Remember the old days when they kidded the service station man about all those extra services he gave? You don't hear any of those wisecrack today, do you? People now realize that those same services may make months of difference in the life of their cars and tires. They appreciate as never before that the service station man really sets the pace for modern customer service in America. a a Probably no businessman in America has had so many things happen to him since the attack on Pearl Harbor. Gasoline rationing has cut deep in to hi main source of revenue His helpers have gone to war, and new helpers are hard to get. His tire business has faded, but his tire-service job has multiplied. People who never worried much about checking tires, batteries or radiator water are now asking for these services almost every time they drive in and he's doing Ms best. He has helped organize car-sharing clubs to get workers to the job. When nationwide salvage came along, he took on a junk drier's IsizL UflaL 1 S f-over IS? yor FJ vour.--, victory Stde . rubber)- ' j, "innard 1 and pl- r ar Car 1 labor, but he still kept smiling.
