SOIL CONSERVATION NOTES
" R. L. Hendren is improving the
drainage on his farm , which adjoins
the White Millpond main canal. Mr.
Hendren is having some lead ditches
cut out with a dragline. These ditches
when completed will provide drainage
for approximately 50 acres of land
i that has been idle for several years
because of poor drainage. These
- ditches will also improve the drainage
on his entire farm. Surveys were
made and the ditches were staked out
to grade by Soil Conservation Ser
vice Technicians working with the
- Soil samples were taken last week
for M. T. Griffin, T. R. Kirhy, E. M.
Perry, 0. C. Long, Sr., and J. A.
A drainage survey was made last
week for R. E. Sutton of New Hope
'Community. Mr. Sutton is planning
to clean out this ditch.
Arvin Hudson in Old Neck Com
. munity plans to seed 1 acres of
land to Irftdino Clover and Orchard
Grass this fall. Mr. Hudson has had
some trouble with this land due to
washing. The mixture will establish
good sod and will help prevent
erosion, and, in addition, will furnish
a good hay crop. ..

other States, reports Lee W. Herrick,
Jr., Extension turkey specialist at
This year's estimated production
in the Tar Heel is 360,000 birds, a
decline of about 5 per cent from last
year. In the nation as a whole, a de
cline of about 20 per cent is an

as the chief reason for the reduction
in turkey growing. Many of the
growers who are reducing their flocks
plan to re-enter the business as soon
as feed prices decline, ho said.
"Many small producers," he re
