Page 4-The Perquimans Weekly, Bits Of COMPILED By , FREDA NELSON The Division of Motor Vehicles at Raleigh reports that we are experiencing more traffic accidents on the Secondary road system than in 1975. During 1975, 469 persons were killed on secondary roads. 381 deaths on U.S. Highways, 336 fatalities on North Carolina numbered highways, and 64' persons killed on Interstate highways. Let's think Safe ty! N.C. Department of Human ' Resources an nounces that the Sickle Cell ' Syndrome Program can no longer fund medical ser vices for patients with sickle cell disease. This measure which became effective July 1, 1976, is part of state-wide cutbacks in spending. In cluded in the services being eliminated are inpatient and outpatient hospitalization, ; physician and dental ser- : vices, drugs and appliances. ; Provisions which will con tinue in the program is A Special Tribute (EDITOR'S NOTE: The following article was sub mitted by Barbara Winslow Rose of Hertford and was written by Jack White, son of,. F. Murray White of Ke'rnersville, N.C. It con cerns several women known to many of the residents of Perquimans County and is printed here for the interest of our readers.) A TRIBUTE TO MY AUNTS A couple of weeks ago, I sat in the Meeting House of Up River Friends at the funeral of the last of my father's sisters. During the service which was held in the manner of friends, there was a period of silence and an opportunity for those assembled to speak if the Spirit so led them. As is so often true few spoke, but all could feel the presence of God, as we silently turned our thoughts toward Him and the loved one whose memory we were recalling. As my thoughts varied, I found myself thinking about not only my Aunt Sylvia, whose funeral it was, but also others of my aunts and ' great aunts who had their heritage at Up River Friends. I began to realize how we so often do not con sider the part this very special group of people play in our lived. First I thought of Aunt Pat (Mrs. Henry Winslow) my erandaddv's sister. I almost turned around to see if she was still sitting the the pew about three or four behind where I was. I do not think there was ever a time when I attended that Church, she wasn't there. In the sum mer, slowly moving a straw fan back and forth as her very presence stated to all to see,"These are my peo ple, this God we are hearing about is my God, and I am at peace with the world." I thought of the heritage Aunt Pat had given me, the knowledge that for her the Christian faith was the answer, and whenever other's were gathered in Christ's name she would be there too. Then there was Aunt Liz zie (Mrs. Robert White), what ' a great lady. How , many of those who filled the church that day were follow ing Christ because of Aunt Lizzie's tender care over the years as pastor of Up River Meeting? Her sermons were ' not great theological treatise, in which she ex pounded on some vague doc trine.: Rather her messages were those which spoke to the needs all of us met as we tried to live in the world. With every word, and every glance of her eyes, one could feel the , unmistakeable thought and unspoken word of "I love you, because you are you.' How many hun dreds of people had Aunt Lizzie comforted in their sorrow, or congratulated in their joys? I remember well that day, very close to the end of her ministry. By then sometimes it was difficult for her to be heard, and even more difficult for t her to speak. She stopped me in the yard outside the meeting and looked in my eyes and said, "Jack, good to see you, . I k-e that someday it will te Jack in the pulpit." Well, Aunt Lizzie, I haven't made it yzt to the pulpit, but r -. ve I have been able in v:zz to continue to f--.C-:tb"veaJ :i j t as you .:" : i i. : ; v i ( i tJ Hertford. N.C., Thursday, July 22, Interest education, testing, screen ing, counseling, referral and follow-up services, which are provided by local health departments, funded sickle cell projects and the Divi sion , of Health Services' Regional Office Staff. However, efforts are under way to replace budget reductions with aid from both other state and private agencies.! Now in the seventh week of the official hurricane season which began June 1 and will continue through 1 November 30, we are reminded that most hur ricanes occur in August, September, and October. This year any unwelcome guests will bear names like Anna, Candice, Emmy, and Frances. It is hoped that the number of these visitors will be quite small, that Orpha, Ruth, Trixie, and others on the list will not materialize. By the way, does anyone know why they don't bear names such as Albert, Ber tram!, Charles, etc.? Aunt Mattie (Mattie Saunders). She wasn't a member at Up River, preferring rather to attend a Conservative Meeting, but what a true and gracious person. Kind, gentle, and the most unselfish person I think I ever knew; It seemed she was always gathering clothing for the American Friends Service Committee, and trying to help someone who had a need. I remember the many times when my folks would send her a scarf, a pair of gloves, or some other article of clothing for Chirstmas and then in a few weeks get a letter from her thanking them for the gift, but with the little phrase at tached "I knew someone who needed them worse than I, so I gave it to them." How could anyone leave a greater legacy? There was of course my daddy's sister, Aunt Myrta (Mrs. L.C. Winslow). She spent her early years at Up River Friends, and in herited the same gentleness and kindness which seemed to characterize my aunts. When she moved to Hertford she became a member of the Methodist Church there. For , many years she served as organist. Going about ner duties often when her health made it a supreme physical effort. In all her life, I don't remember" hearing her speak an unkind word about anyone. Rather she was forever visiting those who were sick, speaking a word of encouragement to those who had a need, and by every action showing that love was the important thing in life. Whenever Aunt Myr ta was around there was no " question in your mind that things were right with the world, you were safe and you were comfortable, you were warm. This quality is found in so few. Then of course Aunt Sylvia (Mrs, Lin wood Winslow) a member of Up River Friends all her life, a first grade teacher for years, and a friend to all people young and old alike. How many hours had she spent driving young people to "Quaker Lake" for sum mer conferences How many miles had she walked as she visited nursing homes : to bring a little joy into older peoples lives?. How many young people had she in fluenced to see that there were human qualities which one needed in this world? She didn't wait to be asked, but rather sought ways to help others. What a lady, what a lot of lives she touched. It seemed to me as . I thought about my aunts sometimes we too often ig nore them. But really how could one have a greater legacy, how could, one be more blessed. Their in fluence, usually in a quiet way, and sometimes when we least expect it, or even 1 notice it, is a part of us and what we might do in this world. I suppose I should . have said it when you all v were living, but I didn't. So now Aunt Sylvia, Aunt Myr-' ' ta, Aunt Pat, Aunt Lizzie, and Aunt Mattie, there is so much about death I don't '' understand, but I do believe that you all in some wsy can hear me, when I say, WazH you for all you havi r?r.t ta r 2.
