LOCAL NEWS Bill's House of Bargains was officially opened on Monday, November 26, with a ribbon cutting ceremony. (Photo by Ken Castelloe) Social Services to distribute foods The Perquimans County Department of Social Services will be receiving cheese, butter, corn meal, milk, honey and rice in December for distritution to low income families in our county. Each family will be required to sign a "Declaration of Income Application" as well as a distribution log showing receipt of the various foods received. As has been the case in the past, this distribution must be on a first come, first serve basis. Food stamp recepients will be automatically eligible and will be mailed an application which they must bring to the Ice Plant in order to receive the donated USDA foods. All other low-income households must pick up an application blank at any one of the following locations: Department of Social Services, Health Department, E. I. C. and Catholic Social Services. Applications will be available at the above listed agencies beginning December 3. Distribution of the USDA commodities will be beginning at one o'clock on Wednesday, December 12 at the Ice Plant on Grubb Street in Hertford. A rain date has been scheduled for December 13 at the same location and time. No cars will be allowed on the roads leading into or out of the Ice Plant property. Please remember to park only in an authorized parking zone. ! Area obituaries SMITH PORTSMOUTH. VA. ? Vernon Jefferson Smith, 76, of 3610 Hartford Street, Portsmouth, Va. died Wednesday. November 21, in a Portsmouth Hospital. A native of Hertford he was the son of the late George William and Mary Mansfield Smith and the husband of Mrs. Virginia B. Smith. He retired after 33 years as an Electronics Technician with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a member of the Port Norfolk Baptist Church, the Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge 173 and the Scottish Rite Bodies of Portsmouth. Besides his wife, survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Susan S. Bowles of San Juan, Puerto Rico; two sons, Vernon J. Smith Jr. of Windsor, Va. and William Thomas Smith of Arlington, Va.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Shirley Fritzlen of Portsmouth, Va.; and a stepson, Roger L. Barden of Chesapeake, Va. Other survivors include three sisters. Miss Myrtle Smith of Rt. 1, Hertford, Mrs. Bessie Harrell of Rt. 2, Edenton and Mrs. Peanie Lee of Norfolk, Va. ; three brothers, Williford Smith of Rt. 1, Hertford, Elmer Smith and Norman Smith, both of Newport News, Va.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 24, at 12:30 p.m. in Snellings Churchland Chapel, Portsmouth, with the Rev. Kenneth E. King officiating. Graveside services were at 3:00 p.m. in Cedarwood Cemetery, Hertford, with Swindell Funeral Home in charge of local arrangements. GREGORY Noah Paul Gregory Sr., 67, of 720 Pennsylvania Ave., died Saturday afternoon, November 24, in Chowan Hospital. A native of Perquimans County he was the son of the late Timothy and Lena Howell Gregory and the husband of Mrs. Elsie Bunch Gregory. He wu the retired owner-operator of Gregory's Garage and was a member of the Hertford Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and a member of the Men's Chorus and the Men's Bible Class. He was a member of Perquimans Masonic Lodge 106, the New Bern Scottish Rite Bodies, the New Bern Sudan Temple, the VFW and was retired from the Hertford Volunteer Fire Department. He was a Navy verteran of World War II. Besides his wife, survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Pete (Rebecca G.) Perry of Rt. 3, Hertford; two sons, Noah Paul Gregory Jr. of Rt. 3, Hertford and Thomas E. Gregory of Rt. 1, Edenton; a brother Timothy Gregory of Chesapeake, Va. and six grandchildren. Funeral servies were held Monday, November 26 at 3:00 p.m. 'in the Hertford Baptist Church with the Rev. Raymond Needham and the Rev. Donald Wagner officiating. Burial followed in Cedarwood Cemetery with Masonic Rites being accorded by Perquimans Masonic Lodge 106. Swindell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Hertford Volunteer Fire Department. WILLIAMS DURHAM-W. Alfred Williams Jr., SO, of 1028 Sycamore St., Durham, died Monday morning, November 19 in his home. A native of Hertford, he was the son of W. Alfred Williams, Sr. of Durham and the late Mrs. Agnes Tucker Williams Bryant and the husband of Mrs. Marjorie Williams. He had been employed for the past 25 years with Crum and Foster Insurance Group Underwriters and was an Episcopalian. Besides his wife and father, survivors include a daughter, Mrs. H. Todd Bolton of Atlanta, Ga.; his stepmother, Mrs. Margaret G. i Williams of Durham; his stepfather, J. W. Bryant Sr. of Greensboro; a sister, Margaret Gibbons Williams of Fredericksburg, Va.; and two brothers, J. W. Bryant Jr. of Greensboro and George S. Williams of Durham. The body was cremated. Memorial graveside services were held Wednesday, November 21 at 1:30 p.m. in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery in Hertford with the Rev. Ben Wolverton officiating. Swindell Funeral Home of Hertford was in charge of arrangements. JOHNSON Allie Edwards Johnson, SS, died November 17 at the Convalescent Center of Sanford. She was born in that part of Moore County which is now Lee. She was the daughter of the late John Jackson and Mary Hunt Edwards. She was the widow of F. T. Johnson, former superintendent of Perquimans County Schools, and had lived in Hertford for many years. She served as a school teacher for many years. She was a long time member of the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. She is survived by one brother, J. Glenn Edwards of Lemon Springs community; one sister, Elizabeth Edwards Brantley, also of Lemon Springs; and severl nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted on Monday, November 19, at 2 p.m. at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. Thomas R. Coye.
