New Chowan County crop agent named BY REGGIE PONDER Chowan Herald Chowan County has a new agricultural exten sion agent. Matt Leary, a Chowan native, has been work ing since Nov. 16 as a Cooperative Extension Service agent focused on row crops and pesticide education. “I’m still kind of get ting settled and getting everything rolling, but I’m enjoying it,” Leary, 24, said of the work. Still, it wasn’t really ca reer he had planned on. After he graduated from N.C, State in December 2013 with a degree in horticultural science, he went to work with his father at the family busi ness, Leary Plant Farm. Although he grew up around row crops in the Rocky Hock area, most of Leary’s experience is in horticulture, and he had planned a career in horticulture. But when the exten sion agent position opened up it seemed to be calling his name. “This opportunity came up and I couldn’t turn it down,” Leary said. “I decided to broaden my Winfall Christmas Parade PHOTO BY CHUCK PAGELS The Elizabeth City State University band performs in the Winfall Christmas Parade earlier this month. LEARY He has horizon a little bit.” Leary knew there would be some pa perwork with the job. learned, though, that there’s a lot of paperwork involved in being an extension agent. Leary currently is working on putting to gether a pesticide train ing to be held in Febru ary. He also is getting ready for next year’s Northeast Ag Expo. Most of Leary’s work deals with the county’s major field crops, such as peanuts, soybeans, cotton, clary sage, corn and tobacco. Leary said the county has good land for grow ing crops. There also is some diversity of soil types even though it’s a small county, with clay- type soils in the south ern part of the county and sandier soils around Rocky Hock. If you have a question about field crops or pes ticides you may contact Leary at 482-6585.
