Jan. 5: General. Jan. 6: Child health all But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel... Micah 5:2 This time of year in churches all over the world, followers of Christ sing Phillip Brooks’ beautiful hymn, 0 Little Town of Bethlehem. The words resonate in our ears and in our hearts. “0 little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie; above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.” Brooks wrote these words in 1868 following a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He was inspired by the view of Bethlehem from the surrounding hills of Palestine, especially at night. As he paints a verbal picture, the hymn catches our imagination. We can almost see Bethlehem in our mind’s eye. We are aware of the power that music exercises over the human spirit. It communicates to the soul what nothing else can achieve. Music reaches where words cannot, ritualizing the emotions deep inside us for which there are no words. Christmas carols encourage us to worship, to hope, and to expand the horizons of our vision so that we can see the light of truth and dare to live justly in a troubled world. CUSTOMER SERVICE HOURS No matter how often we sing them, the simple words of O Little Town of Bethlehem always transport us to the night on which the Christ Child comes to earth. Through a gentle, quiet tune and pictures painted with words, we enter the time and place when God is born into human history and the Word becomes incarnate. The prophet Micah tells us about this town, “But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel...” God is at work, fulfilling that prophecy even through government decrees, preparing for the birth of the Messiah in Bethlehem, the city of David. So Bethlehem becomes the center of our universe at this time of year. Bethlehem is where everything comes together, where a child is born and laid in a manger, a child who will grow strong in faith and in obedience to God. He will love and heal, teach and mentor. He will die our death, and in return, give us the greatest of gifts, everlasting life.
