Myrtle (Mrs. Carl) Qoforth Monday hand- stitched her 688th piece of six Inch yo-yo, round shaped material, to fashion an elegant Christmas present for her husband’s boss from New York. Myrtle (3oforth began her beautiful quilt In April. It’s actually her third Yo- Yo coverlet which she calls a "mixture of all kinds and colors of scrap materials.’’ She figures the quilt cost her about $15 worth of materials which she bought downtown and 1,000 yards of thread, two spools of 500 yards each. Subjects for her poems come from acqualntancss and church sermons. Mrs. Goforth, the former Myrtle Mlaenhelmer of Omcord and Blacksburg, 8. C., developed her writing skill at Blacks burg. S. C. High School and was a "school stringer” lOr the Spartanburg, S. C. Herald. Some of her poetry has been published In area newspapers, including ’Ths Charlotte Observer. Mrs. Goforth met her husband when both were students at Blacksburg High. The Mlaenhelmer fhmlly had moved from Concord to Blacksburg where Mr. Mlaenhelmer owned and operated a shoe Mxip. Although Mr. Goforth doesn’t share his wife’s talents In the eewlng room, he still likes to putter hi the kitchen, even after 36 years as a chef In Hender- sonvlUe, Gaffney, Spartan burg and Greensboro during the early years of their marriage. Tlie Go forths moved to Kings Mountain about 18 years ago from Greensboro, where Cert was In the food business. Mr. Goforth joined Nelsco Mllla here .where he Is controller and iretary-treasurer. i Mrs. Goforth, quite adept as a saleswoman, recalled that during the war years she ran the family hardware store In Hendersonville while her husband was In the foods business. She smiled when she recalled that male cua- tomers fw wiring, plugs and switches were "amased" that the lady could show and sell them the particular product they needed for their home. Declaring that "you have to be In the mood to aew well and write poetry,’’ Myrtle Goforth Mdd she started eewlng for her two brothers and sister at age 18 and "kept It up.” She continues to sew for her children and grand children. Robert) Whlanant, Jr. of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Greenville Goforths, Including the four children, Diane, a nurae, Rebecca, a college student In Clinton, S.
