County to handle transportation for Kings Mountain Aging Program The city is consolidating with the county its transportation ser- vices for residents in the aging pro- gram at the Depot, effective May 1. Aging Director Monty Thornburg said that the cost of transportation will be less and con- solidation will mean that the pro- gram will always have drivers. Thornburg said the estimated cost of transportation for 1991-92 with Transportation Administration "of Cleveland County will be be- tween $31,600-$38,240 for con- tract services and $13,000 for transportation coordinator's salary. Thornburg told city council at the recent meeting that the savings could be more than $7,000 and more importantly than financial savings potentially a consolidated system will address such present problems as securing/retaining qualified drivers and eliminating Edwards chairman of coaches Gordon Edwards was recently elected chairman of the Southwestern Swim Coaches 3-A a Conference for ; the 1991-92 season. The Kings Mountain swim team has grown from 13 members the first year to 25 members this past year. This year, six boys qualified for the State Championship in Chapel Hill. As conference chairman, Dr. Edwards will be responsible for - scheduling all conference meets and taking care of the general busi- ness of the conference. Thornburg said the present drivers would most likely be hired by TACC. Under the contract, Kings Mountain Aging would lease its vehicles to TACC for $1 a year and then when these vehicles are scheduled to be replaced they would be turned back over to the local agency. Thornburg said Kings Mountain Aging would continue to request Title III Transportation funding to assist in the purchase of transportation ser- vice from TACC. TAAC is an outgrowth of the steering committee appointed by the county commissioners and charged with the development of a transportation development plan for Cleveland County. In February 1988, the plan was accepted by the N. C. Department of Transportation. City to advertise for bids The city will advertise in late April for bids for two new sub-sta- tions, the last remaining contratt to be paid for by bonds for electric systems improvements. City council last week approved $954,000 worth of electric line im- provements, including new poles and wiring. With good weather, City Engineer Tom Howard said that major city projects are on target. Howard said that final inspection of Bridges Drive Phase I was com- pleted this week and it took three hours for the inspection team to walk over the area, which includes new water and sewer lines. Sewer lines had to be pulled from behind the houses on Landing and Bridges Streets and out into the streets, he explained, noting that Bridges Drive improvements is a massive project which also includes drainage improvements. Three more phases of the project are to be completed in the next several years with a price tag of $1.5 million when completed. was Dr. WHITEWALL SIZE SALE P175/80R13 $36.99 P185/80R13 137.99 I P185/75R14 res Br P155/80R13 se J) P165/80R13 $35.99 $3299 Size 155R13 P195/75R14 $39.99 P205/75R14 $41.99 P205/75R15 $43.99 one P215/75R15 $45.99 Le LE i Bl Lf {144d SB XP 2 POAT NS RAK P225/75R15 $47.98 ALL AMERICAN GOODFYEAR P235/75R15 $49.99 J = EN BE [00DYEAR PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE COUPON Hi I Igy SONE OIL CHANGE # LUBRICATION 1 - up to five g ¥ quarts oil (30 wt.) City Manager George Wood said the Bridges family had notified him they are pulling the rezoning item from the agenda of the April 30 meeting. "The re- zoning matter is now a dead issue," said Planning Director Gene White. Council last Tuesday voted 5-1 to table the rezoning question over objections of a large number of ad- joining property owners present at a public hearing and after the Planning and Zoning Board had denied the rezoning request several weeks earlier. A number of residents from Bridges, Gold and Landing Streets packed city hall March 26 to op- pose the rezoning.
