nt AR AR Se July 3,1997 Freddy Smith wins at Cherokee Speedway * by GENE AUSTIN Defending series champion Freddy Smith notched his first Hav-A-Tampa victory of 1997, holding off last-ditch challenges from Jack Pennington and Billy Moyer at Cherokee Speedway to complete a flag-to-flag victo- ry in the Showdown to the Shootout 100. Smith pocketed $15,950 for Sunday's victory from the out- side pole position. "It's something special to get our first win of the season here at Cherokee Speedway," said Smith, a native of Kings Mountain now living in Knoxville, Tn. "We've had some tough luck through the first half of the season, but we've never give up. Tonight shows what we have left and hopefully we'll be able to do this more often in the second half of the season." Smith, who had seven victo- ries last year on his way to the _series title, won his first Hav-A- Tampa race since Sept. 14, 1996 when he won at North Georgia Speedway in Chatsworth. The victory at Cherokee was his 15th Hav-A-Tampa win in a ca- reer that includes 759 feature victories. He is currently third in the series points. Pennington finished second ahead of Moyer, the series points leader, with Ricky Weeks and Mike Duvall rounding out the top five. Polesitter Buckshot Miles, Dale McDowell, Ray Cook, Earl Pearson Jr. and Wendall Wallace finished sixth through 10th. The final 10 laps were wild ~ and woolly. A master of saving his tires, Smith held on to the lead as Pennington nudged the rear of his car several times in the closing laps. Moyer made it a three way battle for the lead on the final lap before Smith turned back their challenges. When told by breaking his losing streak that he had done something his former nemesis Dale Earnhardt has yet to do, Smith said, "It's been a joke around the shop that I would win when Earnhardt, his fa- vorite Winston Cup driver, won. So I guess now it's his turn. Saturday could be his day at Daytona." Half the 24-car field was in- volved in a wreck on the back stretch before the first official lap could completed. A six-car pileup led to a 25-minute red flag while cars were untangled. Jeff Smith of Kings Mountain had a scary accident during his _heat race on Saturday night when his car was launched over the second turn wall and out of the race track. He was taken to Upstate Medical Center with cracked ribs and bruises and later released. Smith, son of Freddy and Naomi Smith, ran a backup car Sunday but was un- able to make the feature. On Tuesday the younger Smith said,"I'm just sore. I can't cough and have to leave the room when I start laughing but otherwise I'm o.k." Winner Freddy Smith, right, and his winning car, below.
