Fafe Four THE HARRIS (N. C.) HERALD April 1946 INEVITABLENESS OF OUR CHRIST’S RESURRECnON Text, Acts 2:24. "Whom God hath raisml up, .Ivavinif loosed the pain.s of death because it was not possible that ;he should not he holder! of it.” I “This is the larijfuag'C of the first Christian apostle in the first sermon that wa.s ever preaclied in the church of Chri;.;t. In it St Peter ar;?ues that Jcsu.s had really | a.scen.'ied tuto heaven, because he i had first really risen from hisj pri-ave. Listen to what the apostle says about a subject upon which hi: opi>ortunitie,s, to .say nothin? of hi.s higher credentials qualified him to speak. I. St. Peter states the fact of, f irist'.s resurrection. "Whom ' Christ hath raised up.” Remember • no wa.s prcachin? ,i,n Jerusalem, i and to some who had taken part .in the crucifixion. It was then to persons keenly interested in the subject and who could test the ex act truth of what he said that Peter stated unhesitating'ly the fact of the resurrection. , II. The reason rives for the ■ re.surrection, “Becau.ie it was notj possible that he should be holden ‘ of it,” and his grounds for .-iaying ,i.t is a divine impossibility, arc: I. Jewish prophecy forbade the Christ to remain in the grave. “For David ;peaketh concerning him.” The Jews believed in the reality and in the compulsive force of propliecy, and so as to the prin ciple of argument, there would have been no controversy. j 2. The chai-acter of Jesus. The leading feature of our Savior’s character was its simple truthful- nes.s, and he had .se'.'l that again and again that after dying he would rise. Sometimes he u.sed a metaphor to express his mean ing and sometimes he alluded to Hebrew history. For instance, Jonah, as a parallel, and to the dis ciples he thrice says plainly that he shall rise again. 3. He was the “Prince of Life.” How could the very Lord and source of life be subdued by death if for reasons of wnsdom and mercy he subjected the nature v.’hich he was made his own, to the king of terrors, it was not in the course of nature that he should be held in the grave when his ob ject was achieved. 111. This necessity points to j kindred nec6s.sitios w.hich affect! bis servants and the church. I. The necessity of Christ ris ing again. As he is .so arc we. II. Here is the principle of the resurrection. in the church of Christ. III. A real resurrection must leave some mark on the life. “Like a.s Christ was raised front4 tjie dead by the glory of the Father, even we also should walk in the newness of life.” Rev. W. L. Goode.
