Page 4A-MniltOR-IIERAU>-Thunday, August 18, 1979 Living Togetherl f Mountaineers Hope Football Camp Will Pay Off On Friday Nights By GARY STEWART Sports Editor Kings Mountain High's football players are sleeping together! Now, don't get the wrong Idea. It's all a part of the first annual Mountaineer Booster's Club football camp, and the players and coaches feel It’ll make a big difference In the team’s performance on FWday night. All this week, the 4S varsity players and coaches have been "camping” In the KMHS gym. ’They arise early for a 7:30 a.m. practice session, then eat breakfast together in the school cafeteria, go through a series of skull sessions, practice again In the afternoon, eat dinner and go through more skull sessions and view professional and college highlight films. Most of the players say they had mixed feeling about the camp at first. Junior safety Markus Hager went as far to say he thought it would be "boring". But as the week wore on most players were happy. "I think it’s going to be a big asset,” said senior guard Glenn Carroll during one of the breaks. 9PORK "It’s going to help us get our offense and defense down and everybody will know the plays.” "Being together all week like this will make us feel closer as a team,” added lineman Scott Crawford. "We’ll get to know each other better and learn to respect each other,” added senior end Mark Schuman. Head Coach Dan Brooks had the idea last year, he said, but delayed It bacause of other projects he felt were more pressing at the time, such as in stalling his new formations and organizing a booster’s club. ”I feel like it’s really going to help us as a team,” said the second year mentor. “We’ll be able to get done In one week what would have taken at least two weeks if we weren’t here. We’ll think only about, football for a week. "I think most of the players are real excited about It,” he added. "All of them came in here with good attitudes.” The booster's club sind several other supporters around town supplied the money for the camp and msuiy of the mothers came In to cook the meals. "We’ve got 11 players that are going to know what each other Is going to do,” said lineman Mike Chambers. "Last year we knew our own position but we didn’t know what the other guy was doing. We owe the booster’s club a lot. We know the whole town is behind us. "Teah,” added running back Maurice Jamerson, "and the mothers who came to cook all this food and the delicious deserts.” Schuman said he felt the camp will give the football team better school spirit. "We all ^ave to learn the school song and sing It,” he said. "We’re going to have more spirit.” Jamerson probably best summed up the purpose of the camp. "It’s going to nuike us play better on Friday night,” he said. iririt Players Competing For Jobs Competition ip a word Kings Mountain High football coach Dan Brooks likes, and he likes It most when he sees a lot of stiff competition for starting positions on his football team. If the second-year KMHS mentor had to choose his starters today. It would be one of the toughest decisions he’s ever had to face. "We have a lot of competition,” he said. "We see It everytlme we line up to hit. And that’s good.” ’The competition Is so tough. Brooks said, that even the returning starters from last year’s S-6 team aren’t assured of a position. "All of the players seem to want to learn,” he says. ’"The boys up from the jayvee team and the new ones that came out are really doing a good job.
