KM Progressing Well (From page 4A) long as they stay ooachable I feel like we can get out of them what we want to.” llie Mountaineers lost several stuters and all but 11 lettermen off last year's team. "We’ll have some people at the skilled positions that are un tested,” he said, ‘“niose people, such as quar terbacks, split ends and flankers, are not ex perienced but we feel like we’ve got the athletes that are going to be able to fill them. ”We have better speed and strength than we had a year ago and hope It can pay off fcgvus. But wre don’t know wdiat to expect because the Southwestern Conference Is always strong.” Brooks Is looking closely at three quarterback candidates. Senior Jeff donlnger would seem to have the nod because he does have some varsity experience. But Mike Woodberry, last year’s Jayvee quarterback, and Alan Van Dyke, who Is out for tlM first time, both look good. The Mountles return their best running back from last year, senior speedster Kevin Mack. Mlrlon White, who played some last year, also looks good, as well as Calvin Hood and Terry Chapman, both' up from the Jayvees. Oirls Wright saw some fullback duty last year after being called up from the jayvees, and Brooks can also call on Avery Smith and Maurice 'Jamerson. Smith was a strong runner as a sophomore but did not play last year. Danny Williams, a letterman. Is the leading candidate at center but fighting hard for a starting berth Is Junior Mark Scruggs, who did a good job with the jayvees Ust iCaU. Glenn Carroll returns at guard and Mike Chambers end Mark B. Smith will also see a lot of action there. The Mountles should be strong at tackle. Lynn Thompson and Keith Blanton are returnees, Darryl Strong looks to be a promising prospect there and Henry Hager, out for the first time, will play a lot. Tim Leach returns at tight end and should prove to be one of the best linemen In the conference, but even he Is not assured of a starting spot. Wally Davis, out for the first time. Is making a lot of progress, as well as Robert Bradley. Mark Schuman, who can also play quarterback. Is a returnee at split end and Jeff Llneberger and Markus Hager also look good there. At flanker, the Mountles lost Buck Burton but Brooks said “there are several kids that really want to play there.” They Include Tony Boyce, Boo Robinson and Johnny Ross. Defensively, Blanton returns at nose guard, Thompson at tackle, Ross at monster. White at comerback and Markus Hager at safety. Chambers and Jamerson will see a lot of action at the nose guard. Strong and Williams at tackle; Smith, Wright and Davis at end; Mack, Carroll, Scruggs and Hood at linebacker; Van Dyke and Boyce at monster; Schuman, Llneberger, Rick Chap man and Vince Johnson at comehback and Mark F. Smith at safety. “We feel good about the progress we’ve made,” said Brooks. The kids have a lot of pride.
