W. Woolworth Co., familiarizes two salesgirls in a New York City Woolworth Store with the latest techniques of selling. Mrs. Simms, a native of North Carolina, began her Woolworth career 13 years ago as a salesgirl in a Brooklyn store. Recently appointed to this executive position in the com- Northeastern region office, Mrs, Simms conducts in-store training sessions in 45 Woolworth stores in the New York City area. APEX - The senior choir of First Baptist Church furnished the music for the 11 o’clock worship service. Miss Ida Hayes was soloist and Mrs, E, H. Williams accompanied at the organ. The pastor, Rev. The Young Adult Choir of First Baptist Church appeared on a program Sunday evening at 7:30 at Holly Springs Chris tian Church. Sister Bessie Lee Thorpe was the guest speaker. The opening hymn was “Jesus Is All the World To Me,’’which was followed by prayer, Mr. Rogers offered same. The sec ond hymn was “What A Friend We Have In Jesus,” The sub ject of the lesson was “God’s Judgment On Judea,” from the Book of Jeremiah. TURNER The Raleigh-Wake Shaw A lumni met in the Union Build ing on the campus, Monday, No vember 3, at 8 p.m to workout plans in detail for the Day and Homecoming weekend scheduled for November 14-16. The session was well attended, with many new faces among those who attend regularly. Mrs. Blanche Rivers, presi dent of the local chapter, ex pressed delight at the growing enthusiasm shown by the alumni of Raleigh and Wake County, She also urged the group to continue showing loyalty by at tending the Founder’s Day Con vocation on Friday, November 14, at 11 a.m., at which time the distinguished Mr. Samuel C. Jackson, Assistant Secretary for Metropolitan Development, U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will deliver the annual address. Some encouraging features of the meeting are as follow; The financial reports by Miss Beatrice Martin, recording se cretary, and Miss Almeta Nunn, treasurer of the national or ganization, of an appreciative number of alumni who have paid the national organization. Another feature of interest, that brought applause from the group, was the forceful appeal by Miss Almetta Armstrong, candidate for queen for the lo cal chapter, for all Shaw a lumni of the community to ral ly behind her in helping to bring the honor of the queen’s victory to Raleigh and Wake County. In glowing expression, Miss Armstrong urged the group present to carry the message to those absent alumni to make their annual Founder’s Day con tribution to Shaw University for the alumni fund on or be fore noon of November 14, in order for her to receive vic tory in the annual queen’s con test. She outlined several rea sons why alumni should make a sacrificial gift this year. A mong the reasons is to give encouragement to the new president, Dr. King V. HUD Aids Mexican- America® Area A $171,000 grant from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will make possible the construction of 2.6 miles of sewer and water lines in a predominantly Mexi can-American area of Calexico, Calif.
